Petition is addressed to: LG&E

Chelsea Meadow needs to be properly monitored and managed for it to recover from LG&E's catastrophic broadcast herbicide application. We demand that all future management of the area prioritize saving the remaining plant and animal communities.

Reason

Chelsea Meadow is an important and rare example of a wet sedge meadow in Southern Indiana. It's home to numerous rare and conservative plants like Purple Fringeless Orchid, Wolf's Spikerush, Walter's Marsh St. John's Wort, and Viginia Meadow Beauty. It also likely has a population of endangered Kirtland's Snakes.
In the past, the meadow had mostly been managed mechanically, which was not ideal, but largely kept the plant community intact.
In 2023, LG&E's subcontractors sprayed the entire Meadow with herbicides, killing most of the native plants and providing an opportunity for exotic invasive plants like Carpetgrass and Purple Loosestrife to establish themselves.
