Fire Safety Concerns: Homes built closer together could escalate the risk of fire spread, endangering residents and straining emergency response capabilities. Additionally, firefighters will have more trouble accessing the back of the homes to save lives efficiently.
School Overcrowding: Increased housing density may overburden our already crowded schools, affecting educational quality and resources for our children. The school board should be consulted before such drastic changes are made, as this creates a precedence for future development.
Parking and Traffic Issues: Reduced parking availability could lead to congestion, inconvenience for residents, and compromised road safety. As street parking increases, fire trucks and other emergency response vehicles will not be able to access homes when needed.
Community Character: These changes threaten to irreversibly alter the small-town feel and unique charm that define Platte City, impacting property values and our overall quality of life.
Devalue Neighboring Properties: Reducing lot sizes and building homes of significantly lower value will not only diminish property values but also reduce tax income for the city, placing undue stress on community resources such as schools, roads, and public safety services. This decision could have far-reaching implications for the quality of life in Platte City, affecting all residents.
As residents who cherish our community, we believe that growth must be managed thoughtfully and in accordance with established standards that prioritize public safety and community well-being. DR Horton, as a national builder with no local ties, should not dictate changes that disregard our community's values, or be granted exceptions to our city building codes. Additionally, the developers of Windmill Creek should not profit at the expense of tax-paying citizens.
Therefore, we call upon the planning and zoning commission to deny the proposed changes and uphold the current city building codes that protect our community. Let us grow sustainably, preserving what makes Platte City a special place to live.
We urge the Planning and Zoning Commission to stand with us in safeguarding Platte City's integrity and rejecting this proposal in its entirety.
Thank you for considering the concerns and voices of the residents of Platte City.
