Petition for the city archaeology service of Ghent

I have myself lived in Ghent, and as an archeological professional appreciate the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of Ghent.

Ghent has fascinating archaeology and needs qualified staff to deal with the many aspects of preserving it

Supporting in solidarity with those protecting our global cultural heritage at a time when archaeology-oriented academic departments and administrative bodies everywhere are being devalued and closed.

It is important to cherish the archaeological services worldwide

Gent Universiteit should not take part in the gutting of humanistic science and research. Departments like archaeology need to be supported and developed, not cut. What kind of university active works against the production and dissemination of knowledge? No true university would -- that is only the action of a corporation.

Short-term cuts to heritage lead to long-term losses

As an archaeologist I know the value that the discipline makes to understanding the past and both complementing and scrutinizing historical texts. Any attempts to limit archaeology is an ignorant impediment to such understanding. I stand in support of my Belgian colleagues.

Archaeology is important to us in understanding the past. To reduce this service in such a way is vandalism. As someone who has been a tourist in Ghent I enjoyed and valued your historical heritage. Please do not weaken its future.
