La petición está dirigida a: The City of Fremantle Council and Local Traffic Management Committee who can assess and implement relevant traffic calming measures

We are asking the City of Fremantle to implement effective traffic calming measures along Hope Street to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for residents, pedestrians, cyclists, and families.
We request that the council explore the possibilities which include:

  • Add clear signage and road markings to remind drivers to slow down
  • Explore additional design solutions such as chicanes, narrowed lanes, or planter boxes to naturally reduce speed

These measures are widely used in residential areas to calm traffic and protect communities. We want Hope Street to be a safer, slower, and more people-friendly place, not a shortcut for speeding vehicles.

Razones.

Hope Street is a vibrant, residential area where families, children, and locals walk, cycle, and cross daily. But traffic is moving too fast and it’s putting lives at risk. This petition calls for sensible traffic calming measures to make our street safer for everyone.
Please sign if you share our concerns and want a safer Hope Street.

Hope Street’s long straight downhill section really encourages speeding — it feels more like a cut-through than a local street. Drivers often go well over 50, especially heading downhill, and there aren’t many cues to slow down. This makes it feel unsafe for pedestrians, kids, cyclists, and people just walking their dogs.

Other nearby streets like Stevens Street are already getting traffic calming — we’d love to see similar things here. Simple changes like chicanes or narrow points would break up the long sightlines and force drivers to slow down a bit. Raised crossings or kerb buildouts at intersections would help too.

Also, the wide open grass verges contribute to that “fast road” feel. Adding verge planting — like native shrubs, taller grasses, or even street trees — would make the street feel more lived-in and encourage more careful driving. Streets with more greenery and narrower visual corridors tend to feel safer and calmer.

It doesn’t have to be expensive — even temporary planter boxes or trial slow points would be a good start. These changes would make the street safer, greener, and more enjoyable for everyone who lives here or walks through.

I live on this street and too many cars speeding along its straights on nearly a daily basis. Matter of time before a pedestrian, cyclist, child, dog or car is hit.

Safety for our kids and pets is my #1 concern. Also the noise of the cars speeding along the street is very distracting and takes away from our quiet neighbourhood
