University students across Ghana are increasingly burdened by the high cost of hostel accommodation. In many cases, students are required to pay very high fees for a single bed space, creating financial pressure on students and their families.
Student housing is essential for access to education, yet the rising cost of accommodation makes it difficult for many students to secure a place to stay near their campuses.
The Rent Act, 1963 (Act 220) provides a legal framework for regulating landlord-tenant relations and promoting fairness within the rental sector. However, many student accommodation facilities appear to operate without adequate regulatory oversight.
This petition therefore calls on the Rent Control Department to review pricing practices in university hostels and student accommodation facilities to ensure transparency, fairness, and protection for students.
