According to the Equal Pay Act 1972, “Equal pay means a rate of remuneration for work in which there is no element of differentiation between male employees and female employees based on the sex of the employees.” Indicating, female and male workers must be paid equally for the same role. Gender shouldn't factor wage decisions. In reality, New Zealand's current society pays women less. The median hourly earnings for women is $33.76 compared to $35.62 for men, representing the wide unfair pay gap.
That the House of Representatives enforces an Amendment Act which makes it mandatory that employers pay female and male employees equally and not discriminate against the female gender. According to the Ministry of Women, statistically the national gender pay gap difference is 5.2%. Closing the gender pay gap is important because it impacts societal fairness.
