Petition addressed to: The Secretary, NSW Department of Education; the NSW Privacy Commissioner; and the NSW Minister for Education
Sensitive student information was exposed in a data breach affecting students at James Fallon High School, including health information and personally identifiable information. Parents and students were not informed until approximately five months after the breach occurred.
We understand that cyber incidents can happen to any organisation. However, families have a right to know:
- how this breach occurred
- what specific information was accessed
- why notification was delayed, and
- what steps are being taken to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
Many affected students trusted the school with highly personal information. Families deserve transparency, accountability and reassurance that every reasonable step has been taken to protect that information.
We are calling for an independent investigation into the breach, the handling of affected records, and the delay in notifying students and parents. We also seek a public explanation of the actions taken since the breach was discovered and the measures now in place to protect student data.
By signing this petition, you are supporting a call for answers, transparency and stronger protections for student privacy.
Reason
Students and families trust schools with some of the most personal information they will ever share, including health information, wellbeing records, counselling notes and other sensitive personal details.
When that trust is compromised, families deserve clear and timely information about what happened, what information was affected, and what steps are being taken to protect students going forward.
This petition is important because it seeks answers, transparency and accountability. It is not about assigning blame before the facts are known. It is about ensuring that affected students and families understand what occurred, why notification was delayed, and whether adequate safeguards were in place to protect highly sensitive student information.
An independent investigation can help restore public confidence, identify lessons that need to be learned, and strengthen protections for current and future students.
When sensitive information about children has been exposed, families should not be left with unanswered questions.

My son and daughter both had their information taken. 5 months to find out that this had occurred is not okay. It was more than a students name and age, their private and personal health information was also accessed and taken. The letter that the school sent out did not explain the extreme delay in contacting to notify what had happened. This isn’t transparent at all. All information provided to the school has been accessed. This is a major breach of trust and confidentiality.
