Petition addressed to: Hobart City Council
Bring back the dog poo bags and dispensers, and access to the poo tins (bins) at South Hobart Recreation Ground (the Rec), in Washington and Wentworth Streets, South Hobart
There are now no conveniently located dog poo bins and bags in a convenient location since the Hobart City Council banned dogs from the South Hobart Rec on 1 July 2026.
The bins in the South Hobart Rec are only a few steps within the gates so wrong to deny access to these bins to dog walkers.
Many people walk their dogs in this area as it's central and on the way to shops. Many dogs live near the Rec.
Dog walkers want to do the right thing.
Do the right thing Hobart City Council.
Reason
It is impractical and inconvenient to be expecting all dog walkers to have to walk considerable walking distance to hike up steep Wellesley Street, go to the Hobart Rivulet Track, or to Cascade Gardens to get to the closest dog poo tin (bin) and bag dispenser.

Because certain Hobart City Councillors have bended to the unproven needs of the South Hobart Football Club. Their statements have included that dog faeces are regularly contaminating the ground (not proven and also native animal faeces is the common target for accuse). They have accused dogs as being a menace to the children (not true as the benefits of human-animal interaction is proven to be beneficial in multiple ways that outweigh any negatives and many a photo has been taken of dogs and kids interacting happily on the ground). They claim a dog did something nasty to someone once on the field. (Never reported to Council), no one knows the details). I wish for dogs to be a part of our community in accessible ways. They bring so much joy and deserve places to be doggy. Tas needs to get up to date with the rest of Australia and the world. Please stop the 1890's view of dogs being either dingos or working dogs that could only live outside. Please look at the stats on what these furry children mean to their carers! Keep their play- grounds and respect they can collaborate perfectly well!
