Petition addressed to: Australian National University
The Australian National University has announced it will be increasing rent for on-campus housing by an average of 4.7%.
This exceeds the CPI Index of 3.5% (actual inflation rate) and will force many ANU residents to move off-campus, as well as failing to provide incoming students with an affordable place to stay.
By signing the petition, we can show the ANU that we will not tolerate these senseless price rises, especially without transparency regarding how the rent is determined.
Sign to put limits on rent increases. Sign to show an interest in unionising as ANU residents. Sign to show support for a home away from home (even if you’re not a current on-campus resident).
Reason
On-campus rent is already unaffordable for most students, especially those from low-SES backgrounds, and these increases will only deepen unequal access to the on-campus experience.
In addition, scholarships for residential mentors are being decreased. This deprives many students of the financial support needed to stay on campus, and leaves younger and incoming ressies without the guidance and cultural continuity that makes on-campus living so life-changing of an experience.
This requires action as soon as possible, especially given so many students move to Canberra from elsewhere, and this blatant disregard for the financial impact of these rent increases, which have become progressively larger for years, cannot continue.
There are legal limits to how much landlords can increase rent for tenants. However, under the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 (ACT), ANU students are classified as occupants. This does not provide limits on rent increases, but that does not mean we do not have power in numbers.

11 of ANU’s res halls and lodges are leased out to private equity. The ANU res hall experience is incredibly special, and is a key draw to our university. This experience shouldn’t be reserved for those who are able to pay above-market prices; res halls should exist to benefit students, not large-scale investors.
