Our Request

We respectfully request that democratic legislatures:
1. Formally designate the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/سازمان مجاهدین خلق) as a terrorist organization, based on its documented history of political violence and internal human-rights abuses; and
2. Ensure that the PMOI is excluded from any political role, legitimacy, or influence in Iran’s future governance or transition process.

This request is grounded in documented evidence, democratic principles, and concern for Iran’s long-term stability and freedom.

Why This Matters

As discussions regarding Iran’s future intensify, democratic governments face a critical responsibility: to avoid legitimizing organizations whose conduct and structure fundamentally contradict democracy, human rights, and political pluralism.

Although the PMOI presents itself internationally as a democratic alternative, extensive and credible documentation demonstrates that this claim is not supported by its historical record or internal practices.

Key Evidence and Concerns

1. Documented History of Violence

The PMOI has previously been designated as a terrorist organization by multiple democratic governments. These designations were based on verified involvement in violent activities and security assessments. While some listings were later removed for legal or procedural reasons, the historical record of violence remains undisputed.

2. Serious Internal Human-Rights Abuses

Reports by independent researchers, journalists, and former members document persistent internal abuses, including:
• Coercive psychological control
• Forced separation of families and spouses
• Punishment and suppression of internal dissent
• Severe restrictions on personal freedom

Such practices are fundamentally incompatible with democratic norms and the rule of law.

3. Lack of Public Support Inside Iran

There is no credible evidence that the PMOI enjoys meaningful popular support within Iran. Its past actions, including cooperation with hostile forces during wartime, have resulted in broad and lasting rejection across Iranian society.

4. Risk to a Democratic Transition

A democratic transition requires transparency, accountability, and respect for dissent. The PMOI’s centralized, opaque, and leader-centric structure—combined with its record of internal repression—raises serious concerns that empowering it would reproduce authoritarian governance rather than dismantle it.

What We Ask Democratic Legislators to Do
• Acknowledge the PMOI’s documented record of violence and internal abuse
• Pursue or reinstate terrorist designation where legally appropriate
• Deny political platforms, funding, and institutional legitimacy to the PMOI
• Publicly affirm that Iran’s future must be determined by its people through inclusive, democratic processes

Conclusion

The Iranian people deserve a future grounded in freedom, human rights, and democratic governance. Granting legitimacy or political space to the PMOI undermines these goals and risks perpetuating cycles of extremism and authoritarian control.

We respectfully urge democratic institutions to clearly reject the PMOI as both a terrorist organization and a political alternative, and to stand firmly with the Iranian people—not with violent or unaccountable groups operating in exile.

Respectfully,
Concerned citizens, members of the Iranian diaspora, and advocates for democracy and human rights

This petition is important because decisions made by democratic governments today will directly affect Iran’s future and regional stability. Recognizing and addressing violent extremist groups at an early stage helps prevent the repetition of authoritarianism and political violence under a different name.

The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) has a documented history of violence, internal human-rights abuses, and coercive practices that conflict with democratic values. Granting political legitimacy or public platforms to such a group risks undermining genuine democratic movements inside Iran and misleading international audiences.

Designating the PMOI as a terrorist organization and excluding it from any future political role protects the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. It also ensures that international support is directed toward inclusive, peaceful, and representative movements chosen by the Iranian people themselves—not by unaccountable groups operating in exile.

This petition calls on lawmakers to act responsibly, based on evidence and democratic standards, to prevent the empowerment of extremist organizations and to support a stable and genuinely democratic future for Iran.
