Our community of Beveridge, nestled between Wallan and Craigieburn, faces a unique set of challenges stemming from the absence of regular bus services. Beveridge is only accessible by private cars or taxi services which means those without access to a vehicle are isolated from nearby communities and all essential services. The 2024 bus timetable has just been released with no increase to the current bus timetable which offers only 3 services per day. this is nowhere near enough considering the growing population of over 6,000 residents.

Reason

We the community of Beveridge have the following concerns

  1. Limited Access::- Beveridge, as it stands, can only be accessed by private car or taxi services. This lack of public transportation leaves a considerable portion of our community, including the youth, the elderly, and those with medical conditions, grappling with isolation and struggling to reach essential services. and no other way in or out of Beveridge except via private car. Friends and family wanting to visit Beveridge also have no way of visiting except via private car or taxi. Many of the existing growth areas such as Kalkallo, Donnybrook, and Merrifield all have access to regular public transport services and can easily access essential services and train services. We rhe residents of Beveridge should have equal access to a regular daily reliable public transport option.
  2. Economic Disparities::- The lack of reliable public transportation exacerbates economic disparities within Beveridge. Families with only one registered vehicle face challenges in commuting, impacting their ability to access job opportunities within and outside our community.
  3. Youth Dependence:: Census data indicates that almost 1,000 children aged 14-18 are dependent on their parents' private vehicles. This dependence not only restricts their independence but also hampers their access to educational institutions and social activities in neighboring areas.
  4. Challenges for Seniors:: The senior population, a significant segment of our community, often lacks access to a vehicle or a valid license. This renders them particularly vulnerable, as they grapple with the limited availability of transportation options for their daily needs and medical appointments.
  5. Essential Services: There are currently no medical services, no supermarkets, no convenience stores, no food and beverage stores (except for the golf club) no sporting & recreational facilities, and no other way in or out of Beveridge except via private car. This exacerbates the challenges faced by residents who must travel considerable distances to meet their daily needs, often relying on private vehicles.

Given these challenges, our request is straightforward yet crucial. We implore the authorities to establish regular and reliable 7-day-per-week bus services between Wallan and Beveridge, as well as Craigieburn and Beveridge. This initiative aims to bridge the existing gaps, connecting our community with essential services, educational opportunities, and recreational facilities present in neighboring areas.

Your consideration of this matter is deeply appreciated. We firmly believe that addressing our transportation needs will contribute significantly to the well-being, inclusivity, and prosperity of our growing community.

Thank you for your support, Vanessa Bassett from Beveridge Victoria
