I live blocks away from this site. It is visible and I can hear it. We bought this home 6 years ago, noise, dust, volume of both sound and traffic were minimal. We chose this community and neighborhood as it was clean, safe, quiet and beautiful. Our kids could safely travel kawkawa lake road (the only road connecting our neighborhood to the rest of Hope) to school and the community. It has now become a highway filled with dump trucks that loose debris, travel at high speeds and generally not safe for residential traffic. We do not have sidewalks just the shoulder of what used to be a small neighborhood street, there are also no crosswalks to access the pedestrian side of the bridge over the river. . It has become a highway with heavy commercial traffic. It’s dangerous, damages our roads (the water level is very high so the ground moves easily) and leaves debris everywhere. It’s dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists on the only route connecting this part of town to Hope.
My main concern is increased traffic. However I have additional concerns over the huge eyesore it has and will become in the middle of a residential neighborhood. The added noise of the rock work, heavy machinery and air/noise pollution it will create is unacceptable for a residential area surrounded by homes and well established recreation/tourism areas. I use the trail network up there extensively as a mountain biker, hiker and father with my family. To allow a massive expansion of this mine in this area is wildly irresponsible. It is a few hundred feet from homes!
I’m not asking for it to be closed, but to allow this expansion is a huge mistake, it will cause irreparable damage to our community and the impact will be immense with the increase in activity both at the site itself and the heavy commercial traffic accessing the site.
