Die petisie is gerig aan: Parliament of Ghana

The Ghanaian people have issued a clear ultimatum, demanding an immediate end to all illegal mining activities, known as galamsey, by the end of this month. This urgent order has been sent to the president, his cabinet, the military, the police, and traditional chiefs, and emphasises their shared obligation to protect the nation's environment and social stability. If this deadline is not met, a three-day national protest will be held, and preparations are already underway. We are frustrated by the government's perceived inaction and the long-standing environmental damage caused.

Rede

Illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as 'galamsey', is having a profound impact on the integrity of Ghana's waterways, causing large-scale humanitarian and environmental crises. This degradation is contributing to acute water scarcity, depriving numerous communities of access to clean water. It is also posing significant long-term health and developmental implications for current and future generations, particularly children, due to exposure to contaminated water sources. Not to mention the destruction of crops caused by the chemicals used by galamseyers. Today, all our crops are contaminated with these chemicals, making us unwell. The cumulative effect of these activities endangers the nation's sustainable development and the well-being of its population. Despite the evident and escalating crisis, there appears to be a notable deficit in the implementation and enforcement of proactive policies by the leadership, suggesting an inadequate appreciation of the profound socio-economic and environmental ramifications. As they are constitutionally mandated to protect citizens and national resources, the police and military must intervene more decisively and uncompromisingly to curb these illicit activities, rather than waiting for explicit orders. A robust, coordinated national response is urgently needed to address this critical challenge and protect Ghana's vital water resources, ensuring the long-term health and prosperity of its citizens.
