Петиція була успішною!

Петиція адресована: Local Council Parks department

Areas of grass land have been left to over grow and now are an eye sore.

Local residents in C and B pay the council over £7M in council tax each year.
Yet the state of the green grassed areas area now one that re minds me of a 1970 council estate waste land where no one pays the council tax!
The grassed areas that once dawned lovely green areas where as children would sit and play, dogs would run about, and woman would feel safe walking from the bus, but now, the kids can’t use the areas, dogs that are off the lead poo and it’s impossible to find, and woman feel nervous with the risk of not being able to see what is possibly in the tall grass and Docks, an ideal opportunity for another attack. One resident has started cutting the Docks as she does not feel safe. I spoke to one resident who has sold their house, one of the reasons when she moved in the adjacent area would be suitable for children to play, now that is not the case. Another spoke how they did not want their dog in eth long grass in case of ticks. Some residents have taken to cutting these areas next to their property to prevent weeds and the unsightly look being so close. One resident said they were asked by their house insurer if they were near an area of meadow or grass land as this would raise the Premium due to the risk of fire.
Instead the residents who vehemently object to the eye sore, some have read a polished article on the councils web site, “attractive and biodiverse landscape” “enjoyed by residents and visitors”.
At present, these now tall grassed areas are full of weeds such as docks and ragwort, the council have stated the “project focus on over looked areas, steep banks, areas under trees, small fence off spaces, and large seldom used areas”
“Collaboration between local grounds teams and residents “, “remain attractive and beneficial to wild life “ the only wild life is the anger in the local residents who have all complained to me when out walking and the topic is discussed.
I did speak to one of the machine operative’s cutting the verges, who said that they had been instructed to only cut the verges and leave the remaining area to rest? Is this farming of a 7 year cycle?
What would it take? a day a fortnight, with a tractor towing a set of mowers to cover the whole area, if they can cover an 18 hole golf course it could be used to maintain our green areas.
I and a few others would be delighted to have the opportunity to meet the council and any of its partner teams to discuss the views of the residents with regard to the “this trialing” as it’s the residents living in this area that need to feel safe and enjoy our surroundings. The meeting can be a boots on the ground to see first-hand the eye sore areas and mark up a drawing of areas that could be left under trees.

Note when the issued was raised at the local council meeting the response was place an article in the Currie and Balerno News.

  • Stephen MacGregor, has reviewed the petition and 25 page letter sent, with proposals from the CCC sub committee wrt to areas of flowers/ wilding, and monthly grass cutting. MSP Sue Webber has also met with a senior leader in the council.
I Stephen and walked through the entire area. He understood residents interest of the area, the need to comply with council wilding policy and the limitation of the parks work force.
How ever he has agreed to the following.
    Verges cut every 2 weeks
Main areas with a high cur 4" every 6weeks
The flower areas every 12 weeks following a die back
The next main cut should be by the 10th of June.
The next meeting is with Stephen at 1.30pm on the 11th of June to meet the sub committee and other who may also wish the join, for a photo opportunity of the council listening and working with the community. The intention is a follow up article in the C and B News.

The discussion on the reduced paths widths, we can form a working group to cut and stack the excess turf, the council will then take this away.

Can you let me know if you can attend on the 11th of June, and those interested in being part of a working group.
  • Sue Webber MSP attended one of our resident feed back sessions, we need an other photo this time with Sue Webber, Friday the 14th at 4pm, with everyone welcome to attend, location on the grass adjacent to 193 Curriehill castle Drive. The follow up to this will be a 1000 leaflet drop to residents.

The next community council meeting is on the 12 of March, 19;30 in the Gibson Craig hall, we hope to have Stephen MacGregor form the parks department to attend, so we can feed back the comments from residents.
  • As the current petition has only 3 weeks to run, we will be commencing a new petition supported by an MSP, that will require a photo of residents.

A photo call has been planned for 10am on Saturday the 1st of February, adjacent to numbers 193 and 66 Curriehill Castle Drive.

This should only take 5 minutes and we would welcome as many as possible young and older.

Look forward to seeing as many people as possible.
