Protect Our Youth: Ban Social Media for Minors Under 16 in South Africa
(Pushing for 18)
To the Attention of:
• The Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, South Africa
• The Parliament of the Republic of South Africa
The Petition Objective:
We, the concerned parents, guardians, and citizens of South Africa, are petitioning the government to introduce urgent legislation to ban social media access for minor children under the age of 16, and to implement strict verification laws for teenagers aged 16 to 18.
Why This Matters:
Our children are facing a silent crisis, and it is happening right in front of our eyes on their digital screens. The childhood we once knew is disappearing, and the consequences for the future of South Africa are severe.
• The Death of Physical Play: South African children don't play outside anymore. Instead of kicking a ball, exploring their neighborhoods, and engaging in healthy physical development, they are completely glued to their screens for hours every day.
• Drastic Behavioral Changes: Constant exposure to algorithmic feeds has drastically changed our children's behavior. We are seeing unprecedented rises in attention deficits, severe irritability, anxiety, and social isolation when the phone is taken away.,and the lack of Concentration.
• Toxic Influences & Harmful Content: The internet exposes developing minds to unfiltered, age-inappropriate content. Bad things are easily seen and learned daily—ranging from extreme cyberbullying and explicit adult content to dangerous viral challenges.
• Devastating Psychological Impact: The artificial algorithms are designed to addict. They push unrealistic lifestyles and toxic peer pressure, destroying our youth's self-esteem and directly harming their mental health and academic focus.
Our Demand to Government:
We demand that South African lawmakers follow international precedents and take immediate legislative action to protect our children by:
1. Imposing a strict legal ban on creating or holding social media accounts for anyone under the age of 16.
2. Enforcing strict age-verification mechanisms that social media corporations must implement to prevent minors from bypassing the law.
3. Restricting and regulating access for teens aged 16 to 18, ensuring parental consent and enhanced privacy frameworks are legally mandatory.
It is time to get our children off the screens and back outside. Sign this petition to demand that the South African government puts the mental, physical, and moral well-being of our children ahead of big tech profits.
