Petition addressed to: Parliament of Australia

Territory Day needs to be a public holiday to celebrate the day in its entirety.. Individual access to fireworks should be banned or heavily regulated. This is a petition that is one person's vision only - possibly we require a community forum to find our best solution. This is bigger than a petition that will never get accept by parliment or overriden by the next political party for votes.

Reason

I am a born-and-bred Territorian and have many fond memories of Territory Day. It has always been a unique celebration that holds a special place in the hearts of many locals.
Unfortunately, over the years, the increasing power and functionality of fireworks have changed the nature of the event. What was once a community celebration has evolved into a situation where fireworks can effectively become a dangerous legal weapon used for one night each year.
Fireworks now create significant challenges for emergency services, pet owners, wildlife, and public safety. In many ways, the original spirit of Territory Day has been lost. Most Territorians work all day, only to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on fireworks that disappear in moments, while the impacts on neighbourhoods can last for days.
The noise, disruption, property damage, and safety risks extend well beyond a few hours of celebration. Emergency services are left to manage the consequences of a situation that occurs during the driest and most fire-prone time of the year. Meanwhile, pets, wildlife, and vulnerable members of the community are left to endure the stress and fear caused by uncontrolled fireworks use.
Territory Day should be about bringing people together and celebrating our unique way of life. It is worth considering whether the current approach still reflects those values, or whether changes are needed to better balance tradition, safety, and community wellbeing.
Perhaps it is time to rethink how we celebrate. Let us celebrate Territory Day in the same spirit as Australia Day—a public holiday that unites communities through shared events, family gatherings, and local celebrations, rather than one that creates division, fear, and disruption. Territory Day should be remembered for bringing Territorians together.

Thank you so much for your support, Monique Susan Renz, Darwin

Darwin City Council is left to foot the bill, repair damages to their infrastructure and what rubbish isn’t cleaned up ends up in the ocean, contaminating Parks and Wildlife reserves like Casuarina Coastal Reserve. (Went there last night and was saddened by how much rubbish was on the beach at all tide levels.) The amount of money the NT spends on the clean up should be put to better use.

As you stated territory day is a unique day however your trying to make it the same as every other state or territory in Australia, yes it does cause some disruption in certain locations however banning fireworks completely will take away the uniqueness away from it.

Why people sign

To valid our ideas our values

Because of the enormous stress it causes to the animals

I have had to put out a fire in my yard from children setting off out of control spinning fireworks on the street, I’ve had a near miss of a cracker going into my child’s pram from people setting off crackers Willy nilly at gatherings on public reserves . It’s the windiest driest time of year and in the rural areas there is only volunteered fire brigades for backup who’s going to watch their property whilst they’re absent. I was a child when they were banned in SA we didn’t cry about it. Just have professionals doing the displays. Waste of money. Laser light shows are cheaper and better

Stop the terrorism of birds and animals.

I have lived in Darwin for 36 years, agree with the view point. Locals are not able to celebrate or recognise the day due to working all day and the unsafe selfish behaviour of people that have only arrived to blow stuff up.
My livestock are terrified. I haven’t bought fireworks for 18 years, due to the extremes of crackers in my area. Lately residents from Palmerston have driven out to the rural area, and parked in front of my house to light crackers after midnight!
