Petition is addressed to: General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador

Students in our schools, especially those with learning barriers, are being failed by a critical shortage of Student Support staff. Most students with approved supports are not receiving adequate time with Student Assistants, IRT's, SLP's, or TLA's, and for parents who suspect their students need these resources, wait times for assessments are unacceptably long (sometimes years).

This is impacting student safety, learning, and mental well-being, and putting overwhelming pressure on teachers and existing staff.

Every child has the right to a safe learning environment, and every teacher and support worker deserves a safe, functional workspace where they can do their jobs effectively. Until the most basic need for safety and resources are met, we cannot expect academic achievement to follow.

We demand immediate action from the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District and the Department of Education.

We Are Calling For:

  • Immediate review of staffing levels for:
  • Student Assistants (SAs)
  • Teaching and Learning Assistants (TLAs)
  • Instructional Resource Teachers (IRTs)
  • Speech and Language Pathologists (SLPs)
  • A public report detailing:
  • The number of students approved for supports
  • The hours and staff currently allocated
  • Wait times for assessments and service delivery
  • Increased funding and urgent hiring to meet current student needs.
  • A clear recruitment and retention plan to ensure these critical positions are filled and maintained long term.
  • Ongoing consultation with parents, educators, and administrators to ensure no student is left unsupported.

Reason

As a deeply concerned parent of a child in Grade 1 with autism who attends Gander Academy, I see firsthand the growing crisis regarding the lack of adequate Student Support staff in our schools. I have been contacted by dozens of concerned parents all over the Island who have shared similar stories of their children having supports cut, or no supports at all. This is completely unacceptable and heartbreaking for parents and for teachers and school staff who are trying so desperately to help our students but they can't pour from an empty cup.

Thank you for your support, Ashley Way, Gander

Why people sign

The children of Newfoundland and Labrador need and serve better. Those not in these classrooms do not understand the dire situation at hand.

Kids need more support

Because my children both have adhd and learning disabilities and they need the extra help and that means we need more staff to help.

I have 4 grandchildren with special needs and I feel they are falling through the cracks in the NL school system. With just a little etra help which we were told they would have ,and they are not getting, they would do well but without the help they are failing.

I have 2 grandchildren that need support. One for ADHD and the other is not diagnosed with ADHD because she is a girl.
