As parents, we understand the challenges the district and school face in times of budget cuts. It has come to our attention that several teachers received layoff notices during class yesterday. While we acknowledge the challenges involved in making these decisions, it is disappointing that such a crucial decision-one that directly affects students-was made without seeking input from students or parents, which is deeply concerning to us. It is particularly distressing to learn that Ms. Villareal, a teacher who is greatly admired and appreciated by both students and parents, is also on the layoff list.
Ms. Villareal is a passionate educator who works tirelessly to build positive relationships with each child. She genuinely cares about her students, helping them navigate academic and personal challenges. Her science classes have ignited students’ love for learning and scientific exploration, while her drama classes have also achieved remarkable success-her students have earned multiple awards in competitions under her guidance. Losing such a dedicated and exceptional teacher is a significant loss for the students, the school, and the district.
When Ms. Villareal informed her students yesterday that she would no longer be able to continue teaching at this school, many students were heartbroken and brought to tears. Some students have even expressed reluctance to attend school, as they are experiencing feelings of disillusionment and injustice at such a young age.
