Petition addressed to: Directorate: Land Use Management / City Planning

We, the undersigned residents and stakeholders of Polokwane, respectfully submit this petition to request clarity, transparency, and responsible stewardship regarding the land currently being developed within our municipal boundaries.
Our intention is not to obstruct progress, but to ensure that development aligns with the best interests of the community, complies with legal and environmental standards, and reflects the long-term wellbeing of residents.

Reason

The community has observed ongoing development activities on the land in question, yet:

  • No clear public communication has been provided regarding the nature, purpose, or beneficiaries of the development.
  • There is uncertainty about whether proper environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and public participation processes have been completed.
  • Residents have not been informed about the infrastructure implications, including water, sewage, electricity, and road access.
  • There is concern about the potential impact on surrounding communities, including safety, environmental stewardship, and equitable land use.

  1. We respectfully request that the Polokwane Local Municipality provide:

A. Full Transparency

  • A written explanation of the type of development taking place.
  • Disclosure of the developer(s), project owners, and any public-private partnerships involved.
  • Access to all public documents, including zoning approvals, EIAs (if required), building plans, and council resolutions.

B. Community Participation

  • A formal public meeting where residents can ask questions and receive clear answers.
  • Inclusion of community representatives in ongoing oversight processes.

C. Legal and Environmental Compliance

  • Confirmation that all statutory requirements have been met (including under SPLUMA, Municipal Planning By-Law, and NEMA where applicable).
  • Assurance that the development will not compromise environmental integrity, water systems, or public safety.

D. Responsible and Ethical Stewardship

  • A commitment to development that benefits the broader community, not only private interests.
  • Clear plans for infrastructure upgrades where needed.
  1. Our Commitment as Residents
  2. We affirm our commitment to:
  • Supporting development that is ethical, sustainable, and community-centred.
  • Working collaboratively with municipal leadership.
  • Upholding accountability, transparency, and responsible stewardship of our shared land.
  1. Conclusion
  2. We submit this petition in good faith, believing that open communication and responsible governance are essential for the flourishing of Polokwane. We request a written response within 14 working days and look forward to constructive engagement.
Thank you so much for your support, Ryno Brooks, Polokwane

Why people sign

Rules need to apply to everyone, the correct channels need to be followed.
Further more it is not beneficial for our community to have student accommodation here.

My mother stayed in this house for 25 years we lived here as family and build up a place we can call home. With the new owner is not easy refusing to fix the geyser that broke completely in 25 years. Cut of our water that is INCLUDED in your contract saying that he.s tired of your white people complaining to much and he.s refusing to fix the geyser and told us that he.s giving us notice since now we haven.t received any notice about leaving this place but he.s telling the other people that we must be out end of April without notice. The contract of this house is still on my mother.s name and she passed away last year October my brother took over and till this day did not receive he.s new contract but he gave us notice not on paper but on the phone.

It is important to me because it will influence our guest house in a bad way students can be noisy I sign the petition aswell for our safety and a clean environment

(Edited)

Would like to know what's happening in our area where we have our homes and would like to keep it safe from illegal doings on near by plots or small holdings
