Petition to Preserve Taylors Oval and Oppose the Construction of a New Pool

To:
The Mayor and Councillors
Moree Plains Shire Council

From:
Residents, ratepayers, Aboriginal community members, sporting groups, families, students and supporters of Taylors Oval

Save Taylors Oval

We, the undersigned residents and members of the Moree Plains Shire community, strongly oppose the proposed construction of a new swimming pool at Taylors Oval. We believe that Taylors Oval should remain in its original state as a vital community space, and we urge local authorities to reconsider this plan.

Our Request:
We respectfully request that the Moree Plains Shire Council:

  • Cancel the plans for the construction of a new swimming pool at Taylors Oval.
  • Preserve Taylors Oval as an open space for recreational purposes, community events, and outdoor activities.
  • Engage the community in discussions about alternative solutions to fulfill the need for swimming facilities without compromising our cherished green spaces.
  • Recognise and respect the Aboriginal cultural heritage associated with Taylors Oval in all future decisions regarding the site.

Reason

Reasons for Opposition:

1. Community Heritage: Taylors Oval has long been an integral part of our community's identity and history. It serves as a gathering spot for families, sports teams, and events, fostering community spirit and connection.
2. Aboriginal Cultural Heritage: Taylors Oval holds significant cultural heritage for the Aboriginal community. Previous proposals, such as the potential development of a Big W at this site, were halted due to the recognition of its importance to Aboriginal heritage. This history must be honored, and the site should remain protected as a space of cultural significance.
3. Proximity to Local School: The location of Taylors Oval, adjacent to both Moree Public School and Moree Secondary College, makes it a critical space for students and families. The area serves as a safe recreational area for children and a place for school events, and the construction of a pool would negatively impact this environment.
4. Environmental Impact: The construction of a pool would disrupt the local ecosystem and wildlife. Preserving Taylors Oval allows us to protect the natural environment and maintain biodiversity in our area.
5. Alternative Locations: There are numerous other suitable sites within our community that can accommodate a new pool without sacrificing our beloved Taylors Oval. We believe it's essential to explore these alternatives to ensure we meet the community's swimming needs without compromising valuable green spaces.
6. Community Input: This proposal has not adequately considered community input. A project of this nature should involve thorough consultations with residents to understand their needs and concerns. We ask that the decision-making process be transparent and inclusive.
7. Health and Safety Concerns: The construction and maintenance of a new pool come with health and safety considerations, such as increased traffic, noise, and potential safety risks associated with construction activities.

Thank you so much for your support, Jordan McGrady, Moree 2400

Why people sign

It makes no sense for 2 separate sites. As a friend said- they put a man on the moon surely they can put the pool back where it was as they have found the leaks and stopped them

My family the PITT family are Traditional Owners and this land Always was and Always will be Aboriginal Burial Ground and RESPECT needs to happen in preservation of Our Heritage and Culture in the big M that is why I say NO

Common sense says no

No one in their right mind wants half a pool on one side of town and the other half on the other side of town how friggen Stupid, common sense alone says NO

Taylor Oval was named after my great uncle and my father's and uncles played bith league and cricket on the allowed ground.

Our family has a strong sense of identity in the town and specifically attached to Taylor Oval. It is not and never will be a swimming pool!!!
