Petition is addressed to: Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council

On 15th September 2025, Mayor Allen Aughey confirmed that the elected council members had resolved to terminate the Riverton School Community Library Agreement. This decision was made without consultation with the community. Will impact Riverton District High School student access to important resources. will decrease equitable access to library services for the wider Riverton community, particularly those unable to trave to alternative library services. Underestimates the significance of the Riverton Library in supporting early years literacy and adult digital literacy, and it role as a cornerstone of local life for over 40 years.

Why people sign

I believe in supporting the local community, and I believe that the closure will adversely effect those that live in the area that use the facility!

Because its a travesty what the local council are doing. The library is needed in the community.

Because libraries are incredibly important for all ages in the community; not to mention in rural areas where access to information and literacy rates are typically hindered compared to metro regions

We often stay for holidays at the caravan park and I love to borrow books or just sit at the library and read for a while especially if the weather is too hot or wet.

As a former teacher librarian in a Community library and a current library customer service officer with another council I know the importance of having a library for the community to use. A library is not just for borrowing books, it is a community centre where people can build connections with others, learn new skills and use facilities such as photocopiers and computers that they may not have access to otherwise.
