On 15th September 2025, Mayor Allen Aughey confirmed that the elected council members had resolved to terminate the Riverton School Community Library Agreement. This decision was made without consultation with the community. Will impact Riverton District High School student access to important resources. will decrease equitable access to library services for the wider Riverton community, particularly those unable to trave to alternative library services. Underestimates the significance of the Riverton Library in supporting early years literacy and adult digital literacy, and it role as a cornerstone of local life for over 40 years.

Perché le persone firmano

Losing important community infrastructure such as public libraries results in inequities in communities and impacts those with the least the most. Libraries provide free access to books and magazines for all in the community and also provide safe spaces for anyone. For parents they’re often the first place you take toddlers between school drop offs and bus runs for siblings. And for those without internet access or printers it’s a vital resource to accessing online resources.

Removing funding for the Riverton Community library is another erosion of services in the Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council area. The difference in services between the north and south of the Council region is already concerning and removal of the community library will further add to this inequity.

As the second largest town in the Clare & Gilbert Valleys Council area – and one of the highest per-capita ratepayers – we are disgusted by Council’s sudden and uninformed decision to cease funding to the Riverton School Community Library.

Riverton is the only other education hub outside Clare, with a high school (188 students), primary school (96 students), kindy, childcare, hospital with aged care, and strong sporting and community facilities.

The library serves not just Riverton but Tarlee, Saddleworth, Marrabel, Rhynie, and Auburn, offering free access to books, internet, and study space.

It is a safe, supervised public space for students after school and a vital social and learning hub for seniors and residents without internet.

A community meeting of 43 locals (only conducted AFTER the decision was made public) was not minuted and there has been no proper consultation or evidence to justify the funding cut.

Council continues to promote libraries’ importance while defunding one of its key regional branches.

We call on Council to:

1. Pause the funding cut until clear consultation has been conducted and
2. Recognise Riverton as a key regional service town that deserves equal access to library services.
