Westmount is reducing swim lanes from 3 to 1 during General Swim
razlog
Adult residents of Westmount have limited opportunities to swim. Despite charging its citizens a fee of $64 pp ($50 senior) to swim in its outdoor municipal pool, the City of Westmount is further restricting lap swim opportunities by reducing the number of lanes available during General Swim from 3 to 1.
The picture appearing with this petition was taken the afternoon of June 30, and clearly depicts a pool which is not crowded (despite outdoor temperatures above 30C) and can easily accommodate 3 swim lanes.
We demand, as taxpayers of the City of Westmount, to have our access to AT LEAST 3 swim lanes RESTORED during General Swim.

pred 9 uramiHi Everyone,
Thank you all for supporting the Save Our Swim Lanes petition and for providing insightful comments.
As of 10:30 this morning, we had received 64 signatures and approximately 36 comments. I have sent the petition and comments to Mayor Christina Smith and to Matt Aronson (Councillor for my district), and requested a constructive discussion of the lane dilemma at tonight's Council meeting.
Anyone interested in attending the meeting being held at 7:00 p.m. this evening can do so in person at Council Chamber at City Hall (4333 Sherbrooke Street West) or through the City's YouTube channel at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7ttwfZrkkf9qdJq_widIFg
Hopefully a mutually satisfactory solution will be found, and we can all return to enjoying the pool without angst and frustration!! -

Open swim should mean accommodating all types of swimmers or individuals who want to enjoy the pool. Public health should be top of mind for the City of Westmount and lap swim meets that objective. Please allow for the return of three lanes during open swim time schedules.

I swim in the lap lanes 5 times per week and enjoy it. With only one lane, it is dangerous as there are some slow, medium and very fast swimmers all in one lane.
It's well established daily exercise is essential for health and well being. Municipalities should be doing all they can, based on resources, to encourage exercise and participation. Westmount is most fortunate to have at its disposal an 8-lane swimming pool. Only permitting a single lane for lap swimming the vast majority of the day discourages exercise and participation. If only increasing to 2-lanes only means that 25% of the pool is available for swimming. Cheers, Noel
I am not agree reducing swim lanes from 3 to 1 during General Swim. In my opinion one line is not enough.
To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to express deep concern regarding the recent reduction of swim lanes at our community pool — from three lanes to just one. This change has had a significant and negative impact on swimmers and the overall safety and accessibility of the facility.
1. Discrimination Against Swimmers
This decision disproportionately affects lap swimmers with different levels.
2. Safety Concerns
Without clearly designated swim lanes, the pool becomes chaotic and unsafe. Swimmers moving at different speeds and in different directions increase the risk of collisions and injuries.
3. Lane Designation Prevents Wave Formation
Swim lanes help reduce wave interference, making swimming more efficient and comfortable for everyone. Removing lanes disrupts this balance and diminishes the quality of the swimming experience.
4. Transparency and Accountability
We respectfully ask: Who made this decision? Was it someone who actively uses the pool and understands its dynamics? Community input should be a part of decisions that affect so many.
5. Public Access to Policy
To ensure transparency, we request that the policy or rationale behind this change be made publicly available. A printed copy should be accessible at the pool for all patrons to read.
6. Justification for the Change
We ask for a clear explanation: Why were the lanes reduced from three to one? What data or reasoning supports this decision, and how does it benefit the community?
We urge you to reconsider this change and restore the swim lanes to ensure safety, fairness, and accessibility for all.

Efforts should be made by the City of Westmount to promote swimming at all times and not just during very limited time slots during the day. Emphasis should be on safety and health as well as having fun.
It is precarious to swim outside of a lane with the presence of excited children. Accidents are inevitable and it is just no fun for everyone.
