Petition is addressed to: City of Westmount

Westmount is reducing swim lanes from 3 to 1 during General Swim

Reason

Adult residents of Westmount have limited opportunities to swim. Despite charging its citizens a fee of $64 pp ($50 senior) to swim in its outdoor municipal pool, the City of Westmount is further restricting lap swim opportunities by reducing the number of lanes available during General Swim from 3 to 1.

The picture appearing with this petition was taken the afternoon of June 30, and clearly depicts a pool which is not crowded (despite outdoor temperatures above 30C) and can easily accommodate 3 swim lanes.

We demand, as taxpayers of the City of Westmount, to have our access to AT LEAST 3 swim lanes RESTORED during General Swim.

Thank you for your support, Claire Panet-Raymond , Westmount

News

Open swim should mean accommodating all types of swimmers or individuals who want to enjoy the pool. Public health should be top of mind for the City of Westmount and lap swim meets that objective. Please allow for the return of three lanes during open swim time schedules.

No CONTRA argument yet.

Why people sign

I am a Westmount resident who swims for fitness and relaxation. I love the outdoor pool!
During the summer I count on the availability of the 3 lap swim lanes in the outdoor pool. The recent reduction in the number of lanes during general and adult swim times makes it hard to swim for fitness because the lane is often full and a single lane makes it difficult to accommodate swimmers at different levels (speed and stroke type). Reducing the number of lanes is an inefficient use of pool space (because lane swimmers spread out and swim on the blue lines instead of sharing lanes between multiple swimmers of similar speeds).
Fewer lanes also limits the strokes that swimmers can practice - backstroke is impossible to use without lane ropes. Fewer lanes reduces safety for all by increasing the possibility of collision between lap swimmers and casual swimmers.
Early morning Lap swims are already crowded. Alternate lap swim scheduling options are needed during general and adult swim times.

With only 1 swim lane available, it becomes much too crowded to get any laps done and much too frustrating to try and navigate around casual swimmers in the pool. What’s the point? We are paying for access to the pool same as everyone else. Please keep 3 lanes available for lap swimmers. Thank you.

For mexthis is an issue of safety. Lap swimmers coming to the pool during ftee swim times need at least two lanes to ensure that slower lap swimmers and faster lap swimmers can be separated from each other. Three lanes (slow, medium, fast) is ideal but if there are other reasons for this reduction of lanes then at minimum there should be a slow and fast lane. Without this separation there is risk of injury with different levels of swimmers trying to navigate a single lane.
