Petition addressed to: HABS Elstree School

Having learned more through social media about the reasons behind the HABS teachers’ strike, and about the circumstances surrounding the proposed contract changes and the reported “fire and rehire” process, we wanted to express our support for the teaching staff.

We do not believe it is fair not to honour the original contracts agreed with the professionals to whom we have entrusted the education of our children.

We greatly value the commitment and quality of the teachers at the school and sincerely hope that a constructive resolution can be reached quickly and respectfully for all involved.

Reason

The teachers retention and staff morale are directly linked to children's educational experience.

Why people sign

Sometimes children know better than adults.
Habs students trust and appreciate their teachers. It's a shame the governors haven't shown the same respect and appreciation.
Who will want to work at Habs now?
Who will want to send their child there?
Whoever gave the financial advice to the governors certainly didn't consider the optics or long term consequences.

The school leadership must swallow its pride and negotiate with staff to avoid further strike action. Enough damage has been done to trust between the school and its staff over a cap that won't even be in effect. Let the teachers teach!

Fire-and-rehire is a disgraceful practice. Rushing it through before tighter legislation arrives only reinforces the sense that even the school knows it is wrong.

Teachers are the most important part of any school. Buildings and marketing mean nothing without the people actually educating and supporting the children every day.

Breaking contracts and imposing worse terms on staff is not something a school should be normalising. It goes strongly against my own principles.

My former colleagues deserve better. The profession deserves better.

Teachers are by far the most important resource of any school and deserve decent pensions, even at the expense of shiny facilities, and certainly at the expense of the executive principal’s salary.
