Petition addressed to: Councils within of Hampshire County

The Curtis Museum is a cherished institution that holds priceless artifacts, documents, and exhibits that narrate the rich history and culture of Alton and the local area. It serves as not only a treasure trove of historical knowledge but also a community venue that engages residents of all ages through educational programs, guided tours, and exhibitions.

Unfortunately, due to budget cuts and a lack of funding,  the Curtis Museum is at severe risk of closure. This would mean the loss of an important cultural and educational resource, as well as the loss of jobs for the dedicated staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the museum and provide a rich programme for our community.

Reason

The museum has faced financial difficulties exacerbated by recent economic downturns. However, we believe that with community support and the attention of local government and potential donors, the Curtis Museum can not only survive but thrive. Keeping the museum open isn't just about preserving history; it’s about investing in the continued education and inspiration of future generations.

A group called the Curtis Museum Community Partnership has formed, made up of individuals with a common  interest in securing the future of the Museum and have outlined a multi-faceted approach as follows:
1. Increase public funding dedicated to local museums and cultural institutions by lobbying local government representatives.
2. Launch a community crowdfunding campaign to raise emergency funds to keep the museum operational in the short term.
3. Secure partnerships with local businesses and educational institutions who value the museum’s contribution to the community and are willing to provide financial or in-kind support.
4. Host fundraising events and campaigns that increase museum attendance, engage the community, and raise awareness about the museum’s plight.

By taking these actions, we can ensure that the Curtis Museum remains a beacon of history and culture in our community. Your voice matters. Please respond to this petition to show your support for saving the Curtis Museum and preserving our shared heritage.

Thank you in advance for your support with this campaign, from the Curtis Museum Community Partnership

Why people sign

The museum is an important part of Hampshire history. It is full of important items that locals and visitors find interesting and informative, expanding their knowledge and understanding of the area. All museums are an essential source of information to scholars and schools, even in our high tech modern society. Artefacts are tangible and present a real link to the past. Losing this will mean less attactions for visitors and locals alike looking for a good day out.

Very important for new generations to understand history.

Maintaining our links to the past is vital in keeping our communities together and building a better world for everyone

The museum is a fundamental part of Alton. The stuffed animals should be buried but the space is so important to keep and fill with the history of Alton.

An important part of Alton’s history and not to be thrown away.
