I am alumna of the college. I’ve attended on both campuses. I have experienced inappropriate attention from a tutor as a student and suffered consequences from not reciprocating the interest. I know of others who have as well as others who have dated tutors. Even consenting current student and tutor relationships involving dating and or sex represents a power imbalance and a problematic position for students. The college protects their own. There is no transparency and it is an old school patriarchy. The school has no protections or care for students in this area. This needs to change. Parents and students need to know what has been going on historically and if/what any changes are being implemented in clear, concrete terms. There must be accountability on the part of St. John’s College.

SJC has been notoriously poor at taking student mental and physical health seriously in the past. It's past time for that to change.

The fact that it has taken decades of Kalkavage's behavior being an open secret before administrative action was taken has always been appalling. The administration should release a statement to further ensure student safety.

Transparency in these matters is the best policy for the health of the college and the community and most importantly injured parties

The College is not being truthful or transparent if it fails to reveal the real reason it dismissed a tutor. Protecting the College and the tutor are not sufficient reasons to prevent acknowledging the harm done to former students (and future donors), and the College’s role in creating an environment where these abuses could not be brought forward and addressed previously.

The college needs to be fully transparent in this matter and dismiss other tutors/staff that have conducted themselves in such a manner. There have been many complaints and insinuations surrounding other faculty throughout the years and to my knowledge this is the first dismissal on this account.

Whatever the past, whatever the future, whatever the difficulty of the task or effectiveness of the measures we must reckon with abuses of power.
Annapolis ‘18

When I was at St. John's, I was told by a leading adminstrator that being stalked and harrassed should be taken as flattery and "a boy being a boy." When I was eventually assaulted, I chose to leave, rather than face seeing my tormentor unburdened by consequences. I am unsurprised, though disappointed, that the college has continued its protection of those who should instead be brought to justice.

Annapolis 2005 - My memories of St. John's College include many deep discussions of virtue and ethics, as well as musical events in which Peter Kalkavage played a central role. While I value these memories, they are tainted by the knowledge that people in authority at the college were abusing the trust placed in them. St. John's past, current and future students deserve better. The college's philosophical and aesthetic considerations become irrelevant without a strong commitment to student safety.

Protecting vulnerable populations and BELIEVING THE VICTIMS OF ASSAULT is always important to me. This man is a known predator and has no place at the college.
