We are calling on the DeKalb Central Schools Board of Education to immediately abolish the weekly 1-hour delayed start on Wednesdays and return to a consistent, five-day-a-week uniform start time for all students.

The school board can implement this by restoring the traditional daily schedule and reallocating teacher preparation and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to alternative formats. This can be achieved by allowing educators to complete these administrative tasks remotely, scheduling them during standard operational hours, or consolidating them into dedicated full-day in-service days.

This ensures teachers still receive their necessary prep time without passing the logistical and financial burdens of mid-week childcare onto working parents.

The district's decision to implement a weekly delayed start effectively transfers administrative and financial burdens directly onto the shoulders of working families. While prioritizing cost-cutting measures is understandable for the school system, this once-a-week disruption ignores the rigid realities of the modern workplace, where employers are rarely able to accommodate mid-week schedule fluctuations.

Consequently, parents are forced to absorb the district's "savings" through out-of-pocket expenses for supplemental morning childcare, depleted paid time off, and potentially lost wages or jeopardized employment.

The district could easily explore modern, flexible alternatives for teacher preparation—such as allowing educators to complete administrative tasks remotely or consolidating them into dedicated in-service days—rather than passing these systemic costs onto parents and manufacturing a weekly logistical crisis.

Furthermore, this fluctuating schedule fails to deliver any tangible benefit to the students themselves and fundamentally disrupts the consistency required for their well-being.
Child development experts and educators universally agree that students thrive on reliable, predictable daily routines, yet a schedule that shifts just one day a week throws natural rhythms off balance and creates chaotic morning environments. Instead of fostering better learning, this inconsistency often leaves older students entirely unsupervised to manage their own wake-up times and transportation, while younger students are shuffled between temporary, stressful care arrangements.

By maintaining a uniform, five-day start time, the school board would guarantee the safe, structured environment that students genuinely need while respecting and protecting the economic stability of the local DeKalb community.
