Petition addressed to: Department of Housing

We want the department of housing to "halt" the housing development in Dobsonville for a number of reasons. We had our Community Development Planning (CDP) and put down a couple of projects which are a priority in our area.

  1. Improve our road infrastructure, there is too much congestion in our area . There was a project that was earmarked to build a road where the department intends to build houses. Building more houses in our area will exacerbate the traffic congestion.
  2. Will worsen the issue of electricity, in which investment should be put on improving the infrastructure. Currently, most of the street lights are not working.
  3. We have water throttling issues in our area, maintenance and repair of the water infrastructure is critical. With the new development of houses, it will create more strain.
  4. Our roads need to be retarred, there are potholes in almost every street.
  5. Our community hall is dilapidated

As a community, we appreciate the issue of human settlement - unfortunately its an issue our government will not resolve by building houses everywhere in areas where residents are already crammed for space.

Reason

  1. There was no consultation/or communication with the affected residents of Dobsonville with regards to the project.
  2. We do not have visibility of the plans for the project
  3. Environmental study relating to the area/or space where the department intends to build houses. As the area earmarked for development is a wetland
Thank you so much for your support, Dobsonville - Ward 48 Residents, Johannesburg

Why people sign

My neighbourhood and everything that goes on around it affects me.

Community concern

As much as housing is critical, there are far more issues that need to be addressed before we tackle the housing issue. We need the infrastructure to be upgraded, it would make sense to fix.
1. The water throttling issue, which we now back to experiencing on a weekly basis.
2. Electricity issue - when they build these houses, are they going to upgrade or build bigger transformers that will cater for the new area or are the new houses going to be slotted into the old grid.
3. Sewerage system - currently we are experiencing blocked sewerage system meaning that either the system is not maintained or it's overcrowded
4. Traffic congestion - at any given time there is congestion from T-junction all the way past BP garage. What happened to the project of extending the road from amatayareni all the way to Dobsonville police station
5. There is an issue of livestock roaming our main roads and that is posing a threat to motorists and these issues listed are a few of a bigger problems that we are experiencing

It is important because it’s stops the unwanted developments in our community due to congestion in our area.

Department of housing needs to halt the housing development, we have electricity problems that no one is willing to help, we have water issues we also have streets problem with large potholes and they know about it, the can't take care of us how much if they keep on building houses in places that are also disastrous
