Petition addressed to: Western Cape Provincial Parliament

This petition is a united call for justice, accountability, and the protection of patients’ rights within our public healthcare system. It arises from the concerning treatment of Mrs. Sonday and Mr. Bougardt at Mitchell’s Plain District Hospital, where repeated attempts to obtain clear answers and proper resolution have been met with inadequate responses, delays, and a lack of accountability.

The purpose of this petition is not only to address this specific case, but to stand up for every individual who depends on public healthcare services and deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and fairness. As South Africans, we are guaranteed the right to access healthcare services under Section 27 of the Constitution, and this right must be upheld without exception.

Reason

By signing this petition, you are joining a collective voice calling on the Western Cape Health Department to conduct a full and transparent investigation, and on the South African Human Rights Commission to assess potential violations of fundamental rights. You are also supporting the demand for improved standards, better communication, and accountability within our healthcare institutions.

This is about more than one incident; it is about ensuring that no patient is ignored, mistreated, or denied proper care. Together, as a community, we can make a difference. One voice may be overlooked, but many voices united cannot be ignored.

Thank you so much for your support, Rev Oscar P. Bougardt, Cape Town

Why people sign

People are dying to much in that hosiptal..you wait long to be taken care of even if your condition is serious

I too have a very bad experience and I have evidence how badly my mom was treated and she passed away in this hospital on 18 January 2026

My mom had to wait for 20 hours before she was admitted and transferred to a ward despite getting a referral letter from the doctor. My mom had severe diarrhea and was unable to even walk. My brother and I had to change her at the hospital even after she was admitted despite nurses being on duty. My mom laid in pain for days and was even told to get up and change herself. My personal experience at the hospital 4 years ago was great but now, this whole experience with my mom was just utter trash, I can't believe it's the same place.

Healthcare is important for everyone. We shouldn't be begging and standing at deaths' door waiting for assistance, governed by security guards and 1st level nurses who can't spot a critical case when they see one. There should be enough Drs and nursing staff on duty, especially for such a big hospital. The Government should provide more funding for this, they have more than enough for people like us to be provided high level of care.

Our people dis for hours at times day's at government hospitals..some nurses and doctors think they doing us a favor..nope we pay tax ..treat our people with respect pls
