Territory Day needs to be a public holiday to celebrate the day in its entirety.. Individual access to fireworks should be banned and a public display fireworks available only.

Reason

I am a born-and-bred Territorian and have many fond memories of Territory Day. It has always been a unique celebration that holds a special place in the hearts of many locals.
Unfortunately, over the years, the increasing power and functionality of fireworks have changed the nature of the event. What was once a community celebration has evolved into a situation where fireworks can effectively become a dangerous legal weapon used for one night each year.
Fireworks now create significant challenges for emergency services, pet owners, wildlife, and public safety. In many ways, the original spirit of Territory Day has been lost. Most Territorians work all day, only to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on fireworks that disappear in moments, while the impacts on neighbourhoods can last for days.
The noise, disruption, property damage, and safety risks extend well beyond a few hours of celebration. Emergency services are left to manage the consequences of a situation that occurs during the driest and most fire-prone time of the year. Meanwhile, pets, wildlife, and vulnerable members of the community are left to endure the stress and fear caused by uncontrolled fireworks use.
Territory Day should be about bringing people together and celebrating our unique way of life. It is worth considering whether the current approach still reflects those values, or whether changes are needed to better balance tradition, safety, and community wellbeing.
Perhaps it is time to rethink how we celebrate. Let us celebrate Territory Day in the same spirit as Australia Day—a public holiday that unites communities through shared events, family gatherings, and local celebrations, rather than one that creates division, fear, and disruption. Territory Day should be remembered for bringing Territorians together.

Thank you so much for your support, Monique Susan Renz, Darwin

Darwin City Council is left to foot the bill, repair damages to their infrastructure and what rubbish isn’t cleaned up ends up in the ocean, contaminating Parks and Wildlife reserves like Casuarina Coastal Reserve. (Went there last night and was saddened by how much rubbish was on the beach at all tide levels.) The amount of money the NT spends on the clean up should be put to better use.

As you stated territory day is a unique day however your trying to make it the same as every other state or territory in Australia, yes it does cause some disruption in certain locations however banning fireworks completely will take away the uniqueness away from it.

Why people sign

I had to use my body to shield my children from people throwing fireworks at us as we were trying to get home. I've also witnessed the chaos it causes for animals

The destruction of public spaces including bushland, the danger to human and animal life is unacceptable. The behaviour in Darwin CBD is alarming. Each year more bushland is burned and lives at risk. Trauma to local wildlife and domestic pets both during and for weeks after is unacceptable. Controlled enjoyment is urgently needed.

This year in Darwin was the worst personal use of fireworks on Territory day I've ever seen in the Northern Territory. Bystanders getting injured by irresponsible people intentionally aiming them at others on foot and driving their car. These are unlawful acts of reckless endangerment.

Every year it goes on way too long in the city and suburbs, even though this may be some peoples idea of fun - it is at the expense of families in their homes who don't choose to participate. We left to go out rural to get away from it and someone left empty firework rubbish all over our yard. There needs to be more personal responsibility to suppliers and buyers of explosives, mindful responsible use in areas where people choose to view the fireworks safely, we love fireworks to celebrate - we choose to go out to dundee but the novelty has worn off for us from the type of people who let them off all the time who live around us. The next day there was trash everywhere, people are becoming more careless and young ones more violent with them, which if left unchecked will only get worse.

To protect the animals to many idiots doing the wrong thing on Territory Day. I hate Territory Day 😢

Territory Day can still be enjoyed without the public having access to personal
Fireworks. The privilege is being abused more and more each year and the fireworks continue to be going off days and weeks after the day. I doubt the nt govt test these fireworks as some are so loud they rattle my house and it feels like what I imagine being in a war zone would be like. The fireworks get louder and bigger every year. The distress to domestic pets and wildlife is just dreadful. Every year there are injuries to pets and humans. Enough is enough. Many people just cannot act responsibly with them and they are not the cute little fireworks that were around decades ago. Ban them for the public.
