Petition addressed to: Auckland Council

A proposal has been submitted to construct 12 townhouses on the corner of Charles and Francis Streets, Hauraki. Many residents are concerned that this development is significantly out of scale for our neighbourhood and that the existing infrastructure is simply not equipped to support it.

Reason

  • Increased traffic and congestion on local roads.
  • Additional pressure on on-street parking.
  • Greater demand on existing drainage, sewerage, and other essential services.
  • Residence that have been in the area for 40+ years struggle with the current sewerage pipes not being sufficient without the additional strain of 12 more dwellings. On the 6th December 2025, the sewerage system overflowed into the harbour.
  • Since Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023, the storm water drain in the reserve on Charles Street is well passed capacity. The bank fell in and it has not been attended to since.
  • Increased strain on local schools, parks, and community facilities.
  • Potential impacts on neighbourhood character, privacy, and residential amenity.
  • Safety concerns for pedestrians, cyclists, and children due to higher traffic volumes.
  • Geographic bottlenecks.
  • Additional pollution into the harbour via storm water.

This is about ensuring that any development is appropriate for the area and supported by the necessary infrastructure to accommodate additional residents safely and sustainably.

Thank you so much for your support, Monica Wallace, Hauraki

Why people sign

We have watched the ugly infill housing market grow in this area. We have lived in the street for 26 yrs.
There are so many hard surfaces in these project, storm water has little chance of soaking away naturally. What happens to the green spaces, natural lawned areas. The trees that attract the native birds?
Owners or landlords pay little attention to the gutters outside of their properties and we often see contact mowers blowing the grass clippings into the drains. Our storm water has an OVERLAND flow path. No underground storm water.
Each of these properties will probably have 2 to 3 toilets, times 11!!!! Go figure. Is it greed that would push councils and water are to tick ✔️ these developments off. More rates, more water rates.
Keep it at 4 dwellings allowed, but I guess there is not enough profit in that for developers.
For the last 10 yrs I have predicted, Hauraki will be come an expensive slum in the next 15 to 20 yrs because of al these infill homes. The poor design, the shitty workman ship, and the disregard for the whenua

Safety concerns for children given increase traffic in area. Environmental impact on water quality. Reduction in amenity.

Developments across road from home, neighbourhood doesn’t have infrastructure to support new developments

I agree with the forepoints. The streets are already so packed it’s hard to drive through.

I live in the area and I like the current state of the neighbourhood. I do not want living to get too dense. I’m ok with a few townhouses going on sections but this is too much! It will continue to set a precedent and the streets will be far to busy for kids
