Petition addressed to: New Plymouth District Council
The dangerous behavior on Kent Road's hill—driven by tourists and influencers stopping, standing, or even lying on a 100km road to snap the perfect photo of Mt Taranaki—has created a massive safety hazard for locals and visitors alike. Because the crest of the hill completely blocks visibility, oncoming motorists have zero time to react to pedestrians or parked cars in the live lane.
Reason
Kent Road is a rural 100km thoroughfare that has structurally become an active hazard due to a blind hill crest. Driven by social media trends, influxes of tourists routinely ignore the "No Stopping" signs to take photographs of Mt Taranaki directly from the roadway. Pedestrians regularly walk into the lanes, pose on the double yellow lines, and park vehicles illegally just over the blind brow.
Because enforcement alone cannot police the hill 24/7, local motorists are repeatedly forced to swerve or slam on their brakes when topping the crest, resulting in numerous reported near-misses. Without a physical engineering intervention, a fatal collision between high-speed vehicle traffic and vulnerable pedestrians is inevitable.

We need to have something done about these people stopping and walking/standing on the hill to take photos. I nearly hit a child the other day. The child was standing on the road with no adult supervision. I have seen kids skating with skateboards in the middle of the road and also people lying on the yellow lines in the middle of the road. Someone is going to get killed there one day. Very sad.

I have lived on this road and have seen the dangers first hand and if things don't change someone's is going to be killed if not seriously hurt.
