Andragendet er stilet til: Mayor of Northampton, Massachusetts Gina-Louise Sciarra
City Leaders,
In November of 2024, the Mayor of Northampton along with the Chief of Police and the Commissioner of the Department of Health and Human Services released a statement confirming the City’s commitment to sanctuary. Much has happened in the past eight months, both in our nation and in our local community. Masked federal agents are conducting enforcement activities nearby and at home.
It is time to make an update to this statement with clear and actionable policies that our sanctuary city will take to keep our community members, including our children, safe.
Northampton schools must remain a place of safety for all children irrespective of race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or place of birth. The Mayor and Superintendents of the Northampton Public Schools and Smith Vocational Schools need to release statements in English and Spanish stating that:
- We will actively not cooperate with any federal action that harms children in our care;
- We have instructed local law enforcement to not allow such actions to happen or assist in such actions in any public building that houses children, including school buildings, or to any student of either of the Northampton public school systems;
- We have created a safety plan within the school systems that includes a process to shelter children in non-public spaces and to activate a predetermined legal response.
Thank you,
Northampton Community Members

How will caretakers know that sending their children to school is safe?
Der er ikke noget CONTRA-argument endnu.
Hvorfor folk underskriver
Children must not be separated by parents. It is inhumane. The cruelest policy.. And of all places, schools should be off limits. Just sickening.
Every member of this community deserves the full protections of our city government and no federal or state priority should ever take precedence over the safety, security and well-being of every one of our people.
We have got to help keep each other safe in these times and always—and strong city leadership is a huge part of this. Please show up, Mayor, for the community members who need your support more than ever.

Schools need to be safe havens for all students. We need to protect everyone in our community. All of our futures are tied together!
