We, the undersigned residents, property owners, businesses and concerned members of Blackheath and Ward 14, call for urgent action to address serious security concerns at and around Blackheath Train Station.
The station and surrounding railway area appear to have inadequate perimeter fencing and uncontrolled access, creating opportunities for people to move between the railway environment and neighbouring residential areas without effective monitoring.
Residents are increasingly concerned about housebreaking, theft, robbery and other criminal activity, as well as the impact of these security vulnerabilities on our families, homes and quality of life.
The wider Mfuleni SAPS precinct, which includes Blackheath, recorded 9,629 reported crimes during April 2025–March 2026, including 511 residential burglaries and 1,124 aggravated robberies. While these figures apply to the entire precinct and not specifically to Blackheath Station, they underline the seriousness of the broader security environment.
Reason
WE DEMAND URGENT ACTION:
1. A joint PRASA/SAPS/City security assessment of Blackheath Station and its surrounding railway environment.
2. Proper perimeter fencing and secure gates to prevent uncontrolled access.
3. Effective access control, CCTV and lighting at identified vulnerable points.
4. Increased visible security and police patrols around the station and surrounding residential areas.
5. Immediate investigation of reported crimes and security incidents potentially linked to weaknesses around the station.
6. A clear action plan and implementation timeframe communicated to the Blackheath community.
OUR MESSAGE IS SIMPLE:
Residents should not have to live with avoidable security vulnerabilities on their doorstep.
SECURE THE STATION. PROTECT OUR HOMES. PROTECT BLACKHEATH.
We call upon the relevant authorities to act now — before another family becomes a victim.
