The quality of life for housed and unhoused people along Natoma is abysmal. Garbage litters the street and sidewalks, human and animal waste isn’t removed, drug use and dealing occurs openly. Despite numerous attempts at improvement over the past, little has actually changed. Public officials appear unwilling and unable to provide necessary leadership and resources for what feels like the epicenter of everything that ails San Francisco.

I want to make our street safer. Sidewalks are constantly blocked and cars broken into. Our building is constantly targeted for theft.

I live in this area and would like to see a change since I work hard to pay my rent and when I come outside it smells like pee garbage etc. I would really like a difference change not just for me but people with families.

We own a beautiful, affordable studio apartment at 520 Natoma Street. Though we have shown the apartment to dozens of potential tenants, no one will rent it after they see the condition of the street. In the words of one prospective tenant: "it is scary". It is ironic that our leaders tell us that there are so many unhoused people in San Francisco because there aren't enough affordable units here. Yet, we have a beautiful little affordable apartment that remains empty because of the tents, garbage and human excrement on the street and sidewalks. In the meantime, we have to continue paying property taxes while we receive no services. How are we supposed to pay our taxes when we can't rent the apartment?
The conditions of the street are unsafe for the neighbors, pedestrians and the people living in dangerous, life-shortening conditions on the street. These conditions would not be tolerated in other neighborhoods.
The City receives $15 million per year in revenues and spends $60,000 annually per unhoused person. This should be enough money to keep our streets safe and clean and to assist the unhoused population in an effective and compassionate manner. Doing nothing is not only negligent--it is also cruel. It is time that City government and staff be held accountable to do their jobs.

I have an apartment on Natoma Street that I can’t rent due to the situation of the street. When people come to see the unit they get discouraged when they see the tents,, the gathering of unsheltered people and the human feces on the streets.
Meanwhile I still have to pay the property taxes that are extremely high.
This is completely unacceptable and we need to have clean and safe streets everywhere in SF.

I’m not the kind of person to say that we need to help and welcome people in great difficulty on one hand, and “but not in my garden” in the other. In my eye, the little studio apartment I’m renting 520 Natoma St is fine with all these poor people down the building. What I don’t understand and tolerate is when the street turns into THE public toilet for all 6th and the 5 blocks around - leading to a 24/7 strong smell of urine that prevents you from opening your windows.
If the city, like me, welcomes people in despair, what about providing public toilets? The way it’s done in civilized cities, states or countries? This situation makes no sense, especially if you pay local taxes.

In addition to all of the “quality of life” and “can’t rent out my unit” issues my neighbors have raised, there are very basic sanitation and health concerns. Rats run rampant as charity-donated food is often thrown around onto the sidewalks/street by the recipients. Feces on the sidewalk or street, sometimes ejected onto the sides of residential buildings (“is it dog or human?”) is almost always seen on this block. Swarms of flies and mosquitoes breed in the unchecked filth. It’s as though all lessons of basic sanitation over the past couple centuries have been forgotten, giving this neighborhood aspects of a 19th-century slum. Enough is enough.

everyday i walk from work to home at 11ish. every night i fear for my safety, i always pass by 6th st and natoma and see these people doing drugs, smoking( i have asthma!) and taking the sidewalks (especially on natoma st) sleeping and camping which leaves you no choice but to walk on the road. the street is also dirty and smells pee and poo.

Our property is located by this area and our family and tenants are affected by this issue. This part of the block is hardly clean. There are too many people doing drugs or creating a mess.
