Petition is addressed to: Pinellas County School Board

As concerned parents and community members, we are deeply alarmed by the rising threats of
violence in schools across the nation and, more specifically, at Tarpon Springs Middle School.
Our children deserve a safe learning environment where they can focus on their education
without fear. Given the three shooting threats at our school since the start of 2025 and the
broader increase in school shootings, we strongly urge the installation of metal detectors at the
main entrance to enhance security and protect students, staff, and visitors. County and federal
government buildings are equipped with metal detectors to protect civil employees; our children
deserve the same level of safety in their schools.

Estimated Cost of Installing Metal Detectors
The cost of installing metal detectors varies based on factors such as the type of equipment, the number of entry points, and staffing needs. For Tarpon Springs Middle School, the estimated
costs are:

Equipment Costs: Walk-through metal detectors typically range from $1,500 to $5,000
per unit. Advanced systems with AI-powered threat detection can increase costs.
Assuming 3-5 entry points, the total equipment cost is estimated at $15,000 - $25,000.

Staffing Costs: Schools typically need one or two staff members per detector. However,
since Tarpon Springs Middle School already has a School Resource Officer (SRO) on-site, some staffing costs could be offset. Leveraging the SRO’s presence can reduce staffing costs by 30-50%, bringing the estimated annual staffing cost to $40,000 - $60,000.

Installation and Maintenance: Estimated at $10,000 - $15,000.

Total First-Year Investment: $65,000 - $100,000 (adjusted from previous estimates due
to SRO staffing assistance).

Potential Funding Sources

Pinellas County Schools Budget
For the 2024-2025 school year, Pinellas County Schools has allocated $63.4 million for capital
projects, including school safety improvements. The Capital Outlay Budget includes funds for
security upgrades, infrastructure, and technology enhancements. A portion of this budget could
be allocated toward the installation of metal detectors at Tarpon Springs Middle School.

Grants from Anti-Gun Violence Nonprofits
Several national organizations provide grants for school security enhancements, including:

Sandy Hook Promise – Offers grants for schools implementing violence prevention
initiatives, including security upgrades.

Everytown for Gun Safety – Has funded school safety measures, including metal
detector installations, in past grant cycles.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s COPS School Violence Prevention Program
Provides funding for security measures, including metal detectors, to help prevent school
shootings.

The Security Industry Association (SIA) – Supports school safety grants focused on
advanced security technologies, including metal detection systems.

Pinellas Education Foundation
The Pinellas Education Foundation has a history of facilitating strategic partnerships and
funding for special school projects. While direct funding for security equipment is not explicitly
stated in current grant programs, the Foundation has worked with corporate sponsors to fund
critical school initiatives. For example, in December 2024, the Duke Energy Foundation
awarded a $100,000 grant to support educational programs in Pinellas County
(prnewswire.com). A similar partnership could be pursued for school security enhancements.

Reason

Justification for Metal Detectors

Prevalence of School Shootings
Since 2015, the United States has experienced a steady increase in school shooting incidents. In
2024 alone, there were 144 shooting incidents at K-12 schools, resulting in 107 injuries and
fatalities (security.org). This troubling trend highlights the urgent need for preventative
measures to ensure student safety.

Recent Threats at Tarpon Springs Middle School
Tarpon Springs Middle School has received three shooting threats in recent months, prompting
emergency responses from law enforcement and raising serious concerns among students,
parents, and educators. While no weapons were ultimately found, these threats caused significant
disruptions and heightened fears of potential violence. Installing metal detectors at the main
entrance would serve as a strong deterrent and an additional layer of protection to prevent
any future threats from escalating into real violence.

Effectiveness of Metal Detectors
Studies have shown that metal detectors can be an effective tool in reducing the risk of weapons
entering school premises:

Weapons Detected and Prevented: A 2019 study by the Journal of School Violence
found that schools with metal detectors reported a 27% decrease in weapons found on
campus compared to schools without them.

Deterrence Effect: A study published by the National Institute of Justice found that students were 43% less likely to attempt bringing a weapon onto school property when metal detectors were present.

Prevention of Potential Attacks: In New York City public schools, metal detectors
have successfully intercepted over 5,000 weapons in the past five years, preventing
potential violence before it could occur (volt.ai).

Why Tarpon Springs Middle School Needs Metal Detectors Now
Given the increase in shooting threats and the growing national concern over school violence,
Tarpon Springs Middle School must take proactive security measures immediately.

Installing metal detectors would provide:

A strong deterrent against students or outsiders attempting to bring weapons onto
campus.

A preventative measure that could identify and stop a threat before it escalates.

Increased peace of mind for students, parents, and faculty who are concerned about
safety.

The safety of our children should be our top priority. With three recent shooting threats at
Tarpon Springs Middle School and a rising trend of school violence nationwide, we cannot
afford to wait for tragedy to strike. Installing metal detectors at the main entrance is a proactive
and necessary step to deter potential threats, prevent weapons from entering the school, and
provide peace of mind to students, parents, and staff.

We urge the Pinellas County School Board, school administration, the Pinellas Education
Foundation, and local community leaders to prioritize this initiative and allocate the necessary
funding to ensure the safety of all students at Tarpon Springs Middle School.

Why people sign

I have two children attending Tarpon Springs Middle (and 1 attending Tarpon High) and NOTHING is more important to me than their safety! We are living among times of uncertainty; and the last thing parents should have to fear is sending their kids to school. I strongly believe that EVERY school should be implementing this safety measure to help ensure that ALL students, faculty and staff remain protected!
