Our children’s safety should be of the highest priority! We should have to wait until someone is injured before taking notice. All schools should have safe routes for students.
Kids safety
Pedestrian safety is a top concern. People need to feel safe to walk or run or ride bikes. Getting cars to be responsible and slow down is key
I assisted a medical emergency of a kid involved in a bike-car accident near Roosevelt. He had biked in the protected crosswalk towards the high school.
Young driver was at fault, partly because of the blinding morning sun and rushing. I see near misses there all the time.
My daughter goes to school. I would like her to not die getting there.
Children’s safety
Safety for student is priority!
I have a child and I see people driving too fast through school zones and crosswalk areas
I've witnessed two separate incidents this year where cars clipped kids in unlit crosswalks near SEHS. It won't be long until there's a serious accident.
Painted crosswalks are not enough. Many cars don’t respect the signage, or simply don’t see it. With two-way traffic, a child can make eye contact/receive a wave from a driver going one direction and be ignored by a driver coming from the opposite direction. This also raises the need for two school staff to truly safely supervise the crosswalk at high-traffic times — one for each direction — and leaves kids to fend for themselves when school staff have departed but sports and other activities are still on site. “Safe routes to school” aren’t meaningful if the last street a child crosses is dangerous: this discourages families from allowing their kids to walk and bike.
My daughter goes to Charlemagne and my so goes to Roosevelt.
The safety of our children is paramount!
Amazon traffic is heavy during school hours. Children need clear traffic stops to provide safe passage across busy streets!
On July 19, 2022, my 13-year-old nephew was killed crossing the street in Tacoma, WA. I know all too well the suffering this loss has caused my family, his friends, and community. You have a chance to prevent this from happening in Eugene, the place I live and where my children cross the street to go to school. Please protect our kids.
I personally know someone who lost a nephew riding his bike in a crosswalk near his school. Flashing red lights at crosswalks can prevent tragic deaths like his.
I don’t want a child to be injured or die before crosswalks and flashing lights are installed at key locations in front of our neighborhood schools. In my hometown a crossing wasn’t installed until a child was struck by a vehicle. She nearly died and narrowly survived with extensive mental and physical disabilities. She will never be able to live independently. I don’t want to see that happen here.
Safety for kids
Safety for our school kids!
Children first. ALL schools should have flashing lights that remind drivers to slow down to 20 mph and protected crosswalks that protect children coming and going to school safely.
This is a critical safety issue that needs attention from the City of Eugene right away.
Every day I'm out for walks or bike rides with my 3 year old son and EVERY DAY at least one driver fails to stop at a marked crosswalk for us. Unmarked crosswalks are a whole different story. It's very dangerous out there and it's scary to think about when my son is old enough to explore on his own.
Simply put, it is a public safety issue.
Safety
We walk and bike to school
Daily and have experienced several near misses over the years. This petition is advocating for vital increased safety around all schools.
This will be needed for the next younger generations safety.
I cross East Amazon to get to Charlemagne every morning with my two kids. Drivers consistently speed down the long straightaway and often disregard the crossing guard.
My daughter and other kids have to cross these streets everyday and it’s dangerous.
My children go to school at Charlemagne and I have witnessed the danger children are in while walking to and from school
All schools should have safe crosswalks for kids. I hope Eugene will be proactive about this to avoid a tragedy.
My child is affected by the lack of safe crossing options every day we bike to school.
