Four years ago, our nonprofit had to raise about $40,000 locally to unlock the federal funds that support senior programs in Knox County. For FY 2026, that requirement has tripled to $120,000. Under the Older Americans Act, local communities must provide a 15% match to access the 85% federal share. If Knox County and the City of Galesburg help us secure that match, our community will receive over $700,000 in federal Title III funds for meals, caregiver support, dementia programming, health counseling, and more. Without this commitment, those funds go elsewhere.

This is more than math — it’s a moral choice. Our seniors spent their lives working, raising families, and building the foundation of this county. They should not face hunger, isolation. Every $1 invested locally brings more than $6 back. That’s why other Illinois counties prioritize meeting this match without hesitation.

Now it’s Knox County’s turn. Our city and county officials have the chance to continue serving this community in the most meaningful way possible — by ensuring seniors are not forgotten. This is our moment to show that Knox County values those who came before us. All it takes is the courage to commit.
