Petition is addressed to: Mayor of Nashville, Tennessee Freddie O'Connell

I am writing to express my grave concern over the recent judicial decision made by Judge Cheryl Blackburn of Nashville, TN, regarding the case of Bricen Rivers. Despite the severe nature of the crime, where Rivers brutally assaulted his girlfriend almost to the point of death in a Nashville parking lot. Judge Blackburn lowered his bail from $250,000 to $150,000 after he made known threats of killing her. Tragically, Rivers’ girlfriend has since been murdered, beaten to death, and this lenient bail decision has undeniably contributed to this devastating outcome.

This letter is a formal request to initiate a petition for the disbarment of Judge Cheryl Blackburn. It is imperative that the judicial system holds judges accountable for decisions that put victims and the community at significant risk. Judge Blackburn’s actions have resulted in an irrevocable loss, and it is our duty to ensure that such oversight does not occur again.

The community’s trust in the justice system is severely undermined when decisions such as this are made. By pursuing the disbarment of Judge Blackburn, we can take a necessary step towards restoring faith in our legal system and ensuring that justice is served appropriately and fairly.

I urge you to consider this request seriously and take immediate action to address this critical issue. The safety and well-being of our community depend on it.

Reason

As a woman, this issue is deeply personal to me and to many others. The decision to lower the bail in such a violent case sends a disturbing message that the safety and lives of women are not given the priority they deserve. It undermines the efforts of countless advocates working to protect victims of domestic violence and to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.

For many women, the fear of not being believed or protected by the justice system is a significant barrier to reporting abuse. When the system fails so visibly, it not only endangers the immediate victim but also discourages other victims from seeking help. It perpetuates a cycle of violence and silence that affects countless lives.

By pursuing the disbarment of Judge Blackburn, we can take a necessary step towards restoring faith in our legal system and ensuring that justice is served appropriately and fairly. This action is crucial in demonstrating that the lives and safety of women are paramount and that the justice system will not tolerate leniency towards acts of domestic violence.

I urge you to consider this request seriously and take immediate action to address this critical issue. The safety and well-being of our community, and particularly of women, depend on it.
