Petition addressed to: Hazel Park City Council

Please join us, your neighbors, in demanding that the Hazel Park City Council vote no on renewing the city's contract with Flock at the December 8th meeting.
The Hazel Park police currently operates 8 Flock Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPRs) within Hazel Park.

Reason

ALPRs are cameras that track everything that passes by them, not just cars. It builds profiles by identifying license plates, bumper stickers and unique features of vehicles. This technology carries an innate risk of abuse. Police officers have already misused this technology to stalk their ex-partners. Law enforcement in states with criminalized abortion have used it to hunt down women who crossed state lines to get life saving reproductive care.

Flock cameras have been used to surveil participants in peaceful political protests.
Cameras constantly watching the public without their consent or a warrant violates everyone's Fourth Amendment right to privacy. The use of these cameras to spy on protests will create a chilling effect that decreases the likelihood of people using their Constitutional rights of freedom of speech and assembly.

Anyone who shares these concerns should  sign this petition telling city council  to not renew the Flock contract and get rid of these cameras. Communities throughout Metro Detroit that have already taken down their Flock cameras, including Westland, Ferndale, St. Clair Shores, and more. The defeat of Flock would be a victory for civil liberties not just in Hazel Park, but across the state and country as well, serving as a model of residents coming together to fight for civil liberties. Don’t wait for 1984; act in 2026.

We, the undersigned, call on Hazel Park City Council to vote to not renew the city’s contract with Flock on December 8th.

Thank you so much for your support, Dani Prokopenko, Hazel Park

Why people sign

Wasted money on creating a mass surveillance state, selling our privacy to a 3rd party company

No to a surveillance state. Flock doesn't ask my permission to share my data and location.

I often drive through Hazel Park and don't want to be on video surveillance.

This is not safety, this is mass surveillance. You have no right to know mine and my family's whereabouts. It also effects mental health, always being watched is a horrible feeling and it's against our amendment rights!! WE DON'T WANT THEM AT ALL!!!

Flock restricts our freedom to move through our world without being surveilled. Flock has proven themselves to be bad faith actors with the sensitive data they have.
