Solitary confinement is already a debated punishment. It does damage to the inmates mental well being and sometimes it's permanent. Someone should be notified when they're put in there and how long they're in there for. Some might think ok well they did something to deserve to get put in there but that's not always the case. If another inmate starts a fight with them they both get put in solitary especially if the victim doesn't tell on the inmate who was the aggressor. Prison code is usually you don't tell on anyone or you become a target. Also if they they they're bad people anyways who cares. Guess what if solitary confinement isn't regulated, when you put criminals through that when they get out, they're also now suffering from that mental trauma. That could also make them more violent or a number of things. I know they're criminals but we're supposed to be humanitarians and shouldn't treat them with cruel and inhumane punishments. They should have someone notified and maybe even allowed to make a phone call maybe once a day. Would we rather try to rehabilitate criminals which cruel and inhumane punishment that doesn't work. This would make it to where the inmate also wouldn't feel so trapped and alone. David Allan Coe said the guards can pretty much throw you in there at any time for as long as they want and no body would ever know. That really made me think about it and how awful it is and inhumane. Just because they're criminals doesn't mean we should be inhumane and cruel.
