Petition addressed to: City of Westminster City Council and Public Works Department

This petition asks the City of Westminster in Colorado to install a traffic signal at 144th Ave & Huntington Trails Parkway. Traffic has grown steadily over 20 years, yet this key intersection remains unsignalized, and the next municipal review isn’t scheduled until 2029.

Reason

Adding a traffic signal will reduce the risk of accidents, make the entrance to Huntington Trails safer, and improve traffic flow, as long waits currently occur during rush hour.

Thank you so much for your support, Concerned Residents of Huntington Trails, Westminster

News

  • Thank you to the 126 residents who signed this petition and the 89 who submitted written comments describing their experiences at the intersection of 144th Avenue and Huntington Trails Parkway.

On Monday, February 23, 2026, two residents spoke during the Westminster City Council public comment session to formally present these concerns. On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, the full petition results and all written comments were forwarded directly to Assistant City Engineer Heath Klein to ensure the City had access to residents’ documented experiences.

The City sent a written response on Thursday, February 26, 2026. In short, their answer indicated they will not consider an earlier review or the installation of traffic signals at this time. The City restated that there have been “five accidents near the intersection,” none involving left-turning or U-turn conflicts; that a September 2024 traffic volume study determined the intersection “does not meet the signal warrant”; and that “a full traffic volume study will not be conducted until 2029.”

For many residents, waiting until 2029 for another full evaluation is concerning, given ongoing congestion, extended wait times, and frequent near-miss situations at the only northern entrance to our neighborhood.

If you would like to continue advocating for earlier re-evaluation or interim safety measures, you may consider:

    • Contacting Assistant City Engineer Heath Klein at hklein@westminsterco.gov or (303) 658-2103

    • Speaking during the 3-minute public comment portion of an upcoming City Council meeting (meetings are held twice a month on Mondays at 7 pm. See this link for more details and the calendar: www.westminsterco.gov/159/Council-Meetings).

    • Continuing to document near-misses and peak-hour congestion patterns

The Huntington Trails HOA will be emailing a more detailed communication soon and will outline additional context for residents who wish to stay engaged.

Thank you again for your willingness to support the safety of our community. Sustained, respectful participation will make a difference.
