Many rural areas lack consistent internet or cell service, making radio the most dependable and accessible way for residents to receive timely information. Stations like KYUK in Bethel and KOTZ in Kotzebue broadcast in Native languages and provide essential services such as weather alerts, emergency notifications, school closings, subsistence hunting and fishing updates, and community announcements. These stations help bridge vast geographic distances and keep communities informed, connected, and safe—particularly during natural disasters or extreme weather events.
