Petition to RELOCATE Proposed Cell Tower in Marshfield:
We acknowledge and understand the need for better cell coverage in our town and surrounding towns - particularly in our village and towns to the north and east of Marshfield (Cabot, Danville, Peacham, Groton, etc).
However, we, the undersigned, stand united in our opposition to Verizon's proposal to construct a 140-foot cell tower at 2264 U.S. Route 2. This tower threatens to disrupt our landscape and poses health risks, as it lies within a 0.3-mile radius of our village's densest population.
Research indicates increased health risks, including cancer, including increased harm to children, and harm to pets, livestock, and local wildlife. Additionally, the tower's visibility could reduce property values and be significantly injurious to the natural aesthetic beauty of Marshfield, especially our village center. Verizon must find alternative locations that are greater than 3.5 miles from the village center.
Join us in protecting the health, safety, and beauty of our town by signing this petition to demand the relocation of the proposed cell tower.
Reason
Key Concerns Regarding the Proposed Cell Tower in Marshfield
- Aesthetic and Value Impact: The 140-foot tower will dominate the landscape, standing 260 feet above US Rte 2 at the village's southern/western entry. This will affect the village's visual appeal. Presence of a cell tower can decrease property values by up to 10%-20%. ARTICLE: cell towers lower property values | STUDY: impact on property values
- Health Risks: The proposed location for the 140-foot cell tower places it within a 0.3-mile radius of Marshfield's densest population area. Studies have shown that living within this proximity to cell towers is associated with an increased risk of cancer and other adverse health effects. This raises significant concerns for the well-being of our community. STUDY: health risks
- Impact on Children: Children are particularly susceptible to the effects of cell tower radiation. Research highlights that children are more vulnerable to potential health impacts, necessitating extra caution in infrastructure planning - the tower is too close to the public library and play ground. STUDY: effects on children | STUDY: health risks and sensitivity in children
- Environmental Concerns: The installation and operation of cell towers can harm pets, livestock, wildlife, and vegetation also. Studies have noted patterns of declining bird populations near cell towers and other environmental impacts, making RF radiation a form of environmental pollution. STUDY: cell towers harm wildlife
- Current Coverage: The necessity of the tower's location may also be questionable, given the existing adequate coverage in areas west and south of town. Addressing coverage gaps in less serviced areas might be a more effective approach.
We urge the consideration of an alternative location to protect our community's health, environment, and aesthetic appeal.

This Wednesday, Feb 12th at 5:30 PM in the Old Schoolhouse Common, the Marshfield Selectboard is hosting a meeting for residents to express opinions regarding the application by Verizon to erect a cell tower in Marshfield.
This is an important milestone in the process! The town Selectboard will use what they hear from us all at this meeting to formulate their recommendation to the Public Utility Commission. Whether the town is for or against the tower is something that has great influence in the final approval or denial of the project by the PUC.
All are welcome - please join and share your concerns in a welcoming and collaborative environment. Sharing your thoughts on Wednesday will have a big impact.

Why people sign
I feel the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages. Especially because this tower will be obsolete soon.
My property is very close to the site location. I have many concerns including visual, health, my property value and more. I am opposed to the proposed cell tower.
As a lifelong resident of Vermont that has lived everywhere from southern Vermon ski towns to Burlington Vt and now in central Vermont, I’ve wanted to live in Marshfield or Plainfield for almost a decade. My son goes to school at Twinfield, which serves both towns. I just got approved for a mortgage and I’m hoping to stay here and buy a house and specifically would love to live in Marshfield. I’ve viewed houses that would now be able to see that tower, according to the images replicating what it would look like. And that would be terrible. There’s good enough service, everyone has internet, there’s no reason to put it that close. You could totally put it somewhere NEAR but not as visible. Yea there are some people that are complaining about lack of service but they are most likely out of staters that moved here within the last few years. Please change your minds and don’t play a part in ruining the Vermont way of life!
