Petition addressed to: Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation Department

We ask the Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation Department to:
1.     Completely resurface the Morrison Park pickleball courts rather than continue relying on temporary crack repairs.
2.     Establish and publicly communicate a timetable for completing the work.
3.     Add a lighting system so that people can play after their work days.
We therefore urge the City of Harrisonburg and the Parks and Recreation Department to make the resurfacing of the Morrison Park pickleball courts a priority and restore them to safe playing condition as soon as possible

Reason

The undersigned pickleball players and users of Morrison Park respectfully request that the Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation Department completely resurface the pickleball courts at Morrison Park.
These courts have been one of Harrisonburg’s most heavily used recreational facilities. One group of players who regularly use the Morrison Park courts alone has 143 members, and before deterioration of the court surfaces made playing unsafe, at least 200 people regularly used these courts.

The problem can no longer be addressed by filling cracks or making minor surface repairs. The playing surfaces have deteriorated to the point that cracks and uneven areas interfere with play and create a tripping hazard. As the condition of the courts has deteriorated, people who previously played regularly at Morrison Park have looked for other facilities.

Pickleball is played by people of many ages. The Morrison Park courts provided an accessible public place for exercise, recreation, and social interaction.

For these reasons, we are requesting complete resurfacing of the Morrison Park pickleball courts, including appropriate preparation and repair of the underlying surface so that cracks do not simply reappear shortly after the work is completed.

Thank you so much for your support, Irvin Peckham, Harrisonburg

Why people sign

I like to play at Morrison but the cracks on the courts makes it hard to play

We need the court fixed and also we need lights

We have regularly used these courts on Monday evenings for open play. It's been a place for people meet and play.

The current conditions now has standing water spots on every court in addition to the cracks.

It’s a fun place to play pickleball, and with how big it is becoming, it would be nice to have good courts that don't have cracks.

EMU is filling the gap but is it fair to EMU to function as the City Park? And I am sure that we could raise some funds in the Pickleball community to assist in the repair.
