Petition richtet sich an: Mayor of Roanoke, Virginia Joseph L. Cobb

Feather flags and portable inflatable signs are an essential tool for small mobile businesses such as food trucks to advertise to the general public. These tools are currently prohibited by the Roanoke City charter citing safety concerns caused by distracted drivers. The city charter (specifically sections 36.2-360 through 363) needs to be updated and amended to allow these types of non-permanent portable signage while addressing the concerns of driver distractions, like other communities within the Commonwealth have done.

Begründung

Roanoke relies on the taxes and revenue brought in by all businesses operating within the city limits, including smaller businesses like mobile food trucks. Out-of-date ordinances, like the ones outright prohibiting the use of tools such as feather flags or inflatable signs unnecessarily harm these smaller businesses, causing the owners and operators to seek other locations without these restrictions to operate out of.

I own a small, mobile business that often operates in Roanoke. An amendment like this can help us stay relevant and grow

I am a small business owner here in the Roanoke Valley and I personally think that this ordinance is ridiculous. It absolutely handcuffs small businesses. Small businesses in Roanoke are already taxed more than much of the state and we need anything. We can do to help drive in sales. These flags help draw attention to our businesses and the fact that we cannot have them is absurd. How is a feathered flag stated into the ground going to cause harm to anyone? I feel as if this violates diversity in small business and is a complete injustice as it takes away profits from small businesses here in Roanoke.

I am currently in the permit process for my food truck and was about to order a beautiful feather flag and just found out about this ridiculous ordinance. The city allows them for marathons and other events. This should be allowed for food trucks as well. They are not permanent and do not impede any sort of traffic.

Even though I am not a resident of Roanoke City, I believe this issue has broader implications beyond a single locality. Decisions like this can set a precedent for how small businesses—especially mobile vendors such as food and coffee trucks—are supported or restricted in the future. These businesses contribute to local economies, create accessible entry points for entrepreneurs, and add vibrancy to communities. Supporting fair and reasonable policies helps ensure that innovation and small business growth are not unintentionally limited.

Good advertising for small businesses.
