Petition addressed to: City of Johannesburg Municipal Council

Since June 2022, City of Joburg libraries have been closed on Saturdays, depriving thousands of residents of access to books, study spaces, computers, internet services, and community programmes on the one day many can use them.

Reason

LIBRARIES ARE AN ESSENTIAL SERVICE for learners, job seekers, working residents, seniors, and community groups.

Thank you so much for your support, Joburg Crisis Alliance, Johannesburg

Why people sign

Working people need chance to visit library on Saturdays. Reopen this place. People who don't read are like tree planted and not given wayer

Many Including Myself Can Only Access The Library On A Weekend.

More people are available during weekend to come to the library

Physical spaces where people can learn and share knowledge are important for a thriving society.

The closure of Johannesburg libraries on weekends excluded a large percentage of the population from accessing library services. Many people can only access the libraries on weekends, even students who cannot access their local libraries during the week because the City has closed so many libraries, especially in townships, now need to travel to a library on the weekend since they are now far from their residences.
