Petition addressed to: Dr. Frank Shushok Jr. and the Roanoke College administration

We, the undersigned, strongly oppose Roanoke College's promotion of generative AI, including its partnership with Google involving Gemini. We believe the college should prioritize independent thought, human creativity, and the interests of its students when making decisions about these technologies.

We call on the administration to reconsider this partnership, stop using generative AI to create college promotional materials, and hold an open forum where students, faculty, and staff can help shape the college's approach to AI.

Reason

We are concerned about the use of generative AI in college communications and creative materials, including flyers, graphics, presentations, and social media content. These projects are opportunities to showcase the talent and perspectives of students, faculty, and staff. We believe the college should invest in that work and recognize the people who do it.

Our concerns also extend to the environmental resources required to operate generative AI systems, the privacy implications of their use, their potential effects on creative employment, and their ability to facilitate deepfakes and misinformation. In an educational setting, we are particularly concerned that reliance on generated content may undermine opportunities to practice independent thought, develop original ideas, and build critical thinking skills.

Roanoke College's institutional support for generative AI deserves open discussion and scrutiny. Students should have a meaningful voice in decisions that affect their education and the values their college represents.

By signing this petition, we ask the administration to take these concerns seriously, respond publicly to our requests, and work with the campus community to establish an approach that prioritizes human creativity, responsible resource use, and meaningful learning.

Thank you so much for your support, Harper Norman, Palm Harbor

Why people sign

I'm a graphic designer, and I understand that AI can be a useful tool, but I don't believe that it should be used in a school setting.

Colleges should not allow the use of a tool that is designed to be completely against the integrity of academia

Because AI sucks and schools should not use them.

AI makes people stupid.

!@#$! AI
