Petition addressed to: Ed Grande

I am writing to share serious concerns regarding the 1:1 Chromebook initiative for first-grade students. While I appreciate the district's commitment to modernization, providing personal devices to six- and seven-year-olds presents significant risks to their cognitive development and academic foundations.
At this critical developmental stage, children are in a "concrete operational" phase where learning is most effective through tactile, three-dimensional experiences. Extensive screen time at school disrupts the development of fine motor skills—such as handwriting and manual manipulation—which are neurologically linked to literacy and memory retention. Replacing physical books and paper with digital interfaces can impede "deep reading" habits, often leading to skimming behaviors rather than the focused comprehension required for early literacy.
Furthermore, the 1:1 model creates unnecessary complications in the classroom environment:

  • Cognitive Overload: Rapidly changing visuals and interactive notifications can overstimulate young brains, shortening attention spans and making it harder for students to focus on traditional, non-digital instruction.
  • Social Impediments: Early childhood education relies heavily on social cues and collaborative play. Individual screens create "digital silos" that reduce vital face-to-face peer interaction.
  • Resource Reliability: Technical glitches, battery issues, and connectivity problems frequently stall lesson momentum, shifting the teacher’s role from educator to IT troubleshooter.

Studies from organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics and various educational psychologists suggest that "high-tech" does not always equate to "high-growth" for early learners. I urge the district to reconsider the 1:1 mandate for the first grade and instead prioritize a balanced approach that emphasizes sensory-rich, peer-to-peer learning.
Thank you for your time and for your dedication to our children’s best interests.

Why people sign

I am a retired early childhood educator and am concerned with the effects of computers with young children and the decline of hands-on learning.

The data is in and it’s irrefutable. Too much screen time is detrimental to development and cognitive function. It’s almost as if it’s part of some bigger agenda to dumb down the population. Call me crazy, I don’t care.

Please reconsider Elementary school students on Chromebooks. Early learning depends on hands-on play, writing by hand, face-to-face interaction, and developing attention, not screen time. Overuse of devices at this age can impact focus, creativity, eyesight, and social skills. Technology has a place, but it shouldn’t replace the fundamentals kids need most in their early years. Please reconsider.

While I recognize the value of teaching technology skills, I don’t believe providing individual Chromebooks to 1st and 2nd grade students is age-appropriate. Decisions about when a child is ready for personal technology should remain with families and not be a requirement for school at this young age. If I wouldn’t personally choose to purchase a device for my child, I’m not comfortable with the district assigning one to them.

At this stage, a shared in-class model (similar to what is used in kindergarten) feels more developmentally appropriate. If these devices are not required for work outside the classroom, it would make more sense for them to remain at school rather than placing the responsibility of daily transport on young students.

(Edited)

I’m comfortable with it as a learning tool during class, but not outside of it. At this age, children should be focused on social interaction, creative play, and building friendships—not extended screen time.
